The MHSAA Needs to Change Qualification Standards.

Written Monday June 5th at 3:30 PM

The MHSAA Track and Field State Meet ended this upcoming season. I thought about some things during the season, what if there were more athletes competing in the State Meet.

The league should possibly think about giving more opportunities to compete at the State Meet in Track and Field.

Currently the league states that only you can take the top two teams or individuals and those who met a qualifying standard to get to the State Meet at the Regional. It can ONLY be done at the Regional.

That’s not right.

You see all these athletes training just to get an opportunity to represent their school, just to get to the State Meet. There are times that they do get the qualifying standard but it’s not during the Regional, it could be at an invitational or a dual meet but just a Regional, it’s not right.

The MHSAA needs to include the qualifications at ALL meets not just the Regional. Invitationals, dual meets, league meets, county meets, should count as well.

It would increase the stakes a little bit.

In Middle School Track, you can qualify for the County Meet if you meet the qualification mark during the season. It’s the same for High School when it comes to the County Meet along with the Freshman for their County Meet.

There are some around the State that does not have that luxury to have a County Meet. If you open it up to qualify during the season then it makes sense. It gives an athlete more opportunities to compete to get to the State Meet.

It’s time for the State to make things fair and give everyone a chance to compete at the State Meet not just qualify at the Regional.
