Crighton Out at Adams.

Written Sunday March 31st at 1:00 PM

You can put another coaching job in the mix.

Avondale, Lake Orion, and now Adams.

Highlanders coach Brad Crighton has stepped down from coaching Boys Basketball to focus on his family as confirmed by MIPrepZone’s and State Champs Scott Burnstein.

Crighton whom played (1995) and coached at Adams for three seasons which included a 0-21 season in his first year (2016.) The Highlanders would then bounce back finishing second in the White behind Oak Park but won a district title and then last season won the White finishing with an 18-3 record which included a 38-37 upset of Clarkston in the pre-districts but was knocked out by Lake Orion 56-42 in the district semifinals.

Crighton announced his decision on leaving at a team meeting on Wednesday said that the reason he was stepping down was that he wanted to see his son Jack play and that he wasn’t there to support him. Jack plays basketball and baseball at Orchard Lake St. Marys.

Adams will have some questions next season but if everyone does comes back they will have a very dangerous starting five. The Highlanders should have the Emerizan twins (Jake and Ethan,) along with Gunner Walters in the guards along with big men Peyton Prieskorn and Austin Ursuay returning.

It will be very interesting to see what happens at Adams now that Crighton is not there anymore and especially for those seniors who will have their third coach in four years.

Avondale has their new Varsity Football Coach.

Written Friday March 29th at 2:25 PM

The Yellow Jackets have their new football coach.

Avondale named Corey Bell as the team’s new Varsity football coach replacing Ed Couturier who stepped down after spending three seasons with the team taking them to the playoffs in the last two years.

Bell was confirmed on the Avondale Yellow Jackets Athletic Twitter and Facebook pages. There was also a meet and greet that took place on Monday night.

Bell played quarterback at Oxford under coach Bud Rowley before going to Alma College where he played on the offensive side of the ball and on special teams where he was the Scotts special teams player of the year in 2015. Bell would get into the coaching ranks after college football. He coached quarterbacks and wide receivers while at Findlania University last season.

Bell coming to his new team will have some talented linemen back in Jamison Jodway and Brian Keturkas and running backs David Holloman along with Torey Coleman who can also play defensive back. Avondale will need to find a quarterback and some wide recievers that can make an impact this upcoming fall.

The Yellow Jackets have went 13-10 in the last two seasons which included both playoff appearances to which they lost to Brandon in 2017 and Farmington last season.

Avondale will have Berkley, Ferndale, North Farmington, Farmington, Royal Oak, and Pontiac in the Blue this season.

Thoughts.

I really like this hire because of the local ties and experience although I’m curious how Bell will change the offense around at Avondale going away from the veer to more of a power or spread look. The defense will be a question but what Bell brings is a ton of experience which will help his new team get things rolling.

The Yellow Jackets are expected to compete for the Blue this season with the likes of Farmington, North Farmington and Ferndale. Those three teams look to be their top challengers to Avondale this season. The Yellow Jackets open up the season with Troy and then Detroit Renaissance the following week before closing out the season against Seaholm.

Bell joins Jon Herstein whom coaches at North Farmington as new head coaches in the OAA. Pontiac is still looking for a new head coach last updated.

It will be interesting but the Yellow Jackets got themselves one heck of a football coach.

Girls Basketball Shortcomings.

Written Saturday March 23rd at 2:20 PM
Updated Monday July 29th at 12:10 AM

The Girls Basketball season has came to an end, here are the storylines heading into next season for each team.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors could be a different team after a successful playoff run which ended in a 55-40 loss to Saginaw Heritage in the Division One State Final. They will have talent coming back in Kayonia Willis, Jasmine Worthy, and Cheyenne McEvans returning but the bench is a huge concern going forward. If Southfield Arts and Tech wants to make a run next season the bench needs to step up or trouble could loom for the Warriors.

Royal Oak: The Ravens lost a lot of talent from last season which included Samantha Potter, Nina Conley, and Jessica Adams to graduation. Royal Oak should have Sarah Soraghan, Sarah Ammon, Anna Ross, Ana Johnson, Elinor Kochanski, Sam Mullen, newcomer Emily Jenkins, and Lexi Romesberg returning next season. I don’t think that coach Brian Sopota will have a compete rebuild but there could be growing pains next year.

Clarkston: The Wolves had an odd first season under coach John Weyer. They started off 0-5 with a brutal schedule only to turn things around in the second half of the season. Clarkston has the majority of their team coming back next season including Taylor Heaten, Jennifer Starnes, Sam Aris, Madison Skorupski, Lexi Linton, and Kaitlyn Kaul. Program strength is very strong next season and they have a tough non conference schedule looming. The Wolves will be a team to watch next season.

Bloomfield Hills: The Blackhawks lose two seniors in Maryiam Hashim and Grace Getz but coach Jeff Rubin’s team returns Angelina Saavya, Keleen Fife, and Jordan Banks. Bloomfield Hills will need to address their depth next season. Expect Rubin’s team to be in the mix.

Groves: The Falcons have Ellie Ruprich along with Mia Yarberry returning next season for coach Jessica Wiesler but they have questions. Groves did compete well in the Red this season but going forward this team could be in for some rough times.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars should be interesting to watch this offseason. Stoney Creek loses Meghan Solek and Emily Eckhout to graduation. The Cougars will have Lily DiPani, Sydney LaPrairie, and Devin Vowels returning for coach Kellen James. Stoney Creek also has a freshman to watch who is coming into the program. The Cougars will be a team to watch next season.

North Farmington: The Raiders had a tough year this season but coach Jeff Simpson should have some experience returning in Molly Simpson and Maya Kelly. North Farmington will have some question especially in the post. The interior will be something that the Raiders will need to address next season in the very tough White.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers are ready to make the jump from the White to the Red. Coach Bert Mosley returns the balk of his team back including Maya Bobo, Logan Lewis, Lola Chambers, among others. West Bloomfield should be a team forced to be recon with next season.

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets could be an interesting team heading into next season. Avondale loses Melishia Rodriguez and Olivia Russell to graduation but they have Brala Benion who transferred in from Pontiac along with Keori Lee, Taniah Jackson, and Reigan Lawerence returning for coach Bob Lees. The Yellow Jackets will need to address depth but there are two proven players from the junior varsity ranks to watch out for. Avondale if they can address their non conference schedule will be a team worth watching next season.

Oxford: The Wildcats had a surprising successful year this season. They lost Ashley Herschman and HaLaya Cato to graduation. Oxford has Sarah Tyrrell, Emma Morris, Gabby Dinges, and Mackenzie Methner returning for coach Rachel Bryer. Program strength is very strong for the Wildcats. Oxford could be a team to watch next season. They work hard and are relentless.

Troy: The Colts had a very good season which included an upset of Utica Eisenhower in the district semifinal. Troy lost a ton of experience from last season's team including a four year point guard in Emily Olson. The Colts have a ton of talent back from last season's team including Kendal Zeiter, Athena Sampson, Calen Knight, Riya Chakravity, Elena Renke, and Laura Gumma returning for coach Simon Bato and a strong junior varsity team from last year which includes Charlotte Soboka and Kayla Rutledge. Troy should be a team worth watching next season.

Adams: The Highlanders are on the upward swing after beating Romeo in the district semifinals and going toe to toe with Waterford Kettering in the district finals last season. Adams has a ton of proven talent in Maddie Doelinga, Amelia Drahnak, Abbey Drahnak, Elizabeth Blaine, Maddie Kessman, Anaiah Howard, Lauren Petersmark, and Nicole Clarehout returning (only lose two seniors) for coach Shay Lewis If there is some question marks the Highlanders will face it's in the post. Adams looks to be very strong, they are trusting the process and are a rising team heading into the offseason.

Lake Orion: The Dragons had a transitioning season under coach Bob Brydges last season. Lake Orion loses six seniors including Paytin Shadaia and Sophie Wyborski. The Dragons have Meghan Marshall, Kierra Tierney, Grace Vukelich, and Melissa Normand returning and some stability under Brydges. Lake Orion's biggest concern this offseason is the mental mindset. This has been a problem that has haunted this program for years and something that Brydges needs to change if they want to turn the corner. Program strength is very strong next season. Brydges will have a full offseason to put his stamp on the program and with his history and record the Dragons should be different heading into next season.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks really underachieved this season. Troy Athens has Izzy Crumm, Emma Wodwalski, Clare Shoales, Shayna Landess, and the Bright sisters (Grace and Abby) returning for coach Stacie Klumpp. The Red Hawks with the experience they have back is in an interesting spot. They are a team to watch next season for sure.

Farmington: The Falcons will have some experience returning for coach Laura Guzman in Val Pallett and Autumn Bartlett but they have some questions. Farmington will be in the Blue next season which should be able to help them compete.

Rochester: The Falcons under then coach Jeff Haney restored the culture by sharing the Blue with Berkley this season but Haney stepped down from coaching. Bill Thurston takes over the team and is their fourth coach in four years. Rochester has Laura Kucera and Megan Lorenzo back. The Falcons should be a team worth watching heading into next season.

Berkley: The Bears future looks bright for coach Kirk Carolan with incoming freshman Jillian Gomes coming into the program to go along with a couple of young players that saw a ton of playing time including Ashley Loon. Berkley despite winning 16 games this season will be young. Program strength is question surrounding this team but if they can keep the momentum going then there is no reason not to count the Bears out next season.

Seaholm: It was an interesting first season for coach Chris Manchester which saw a ton of changes along with some big wins and tough losses. The Maples will be a team to watch this offseason as they have a ton of talent returning in Julia Bell, Meredith Owens, Helena Beasley, Julia Crump, and Lily Morris. The question is how this team will respond under Manchester in his second year. Seaholm could be a team that could be in contention next season in the Blue but they all have to be on the same page to make it work.

Ferndale: The Eagles will have their fourth coach in four seasons as Keith Paris takes over this season. Paris replaces Laura Hofener who stepped down after one season at Ferndale. If the Eagles want to take the next step and improve they will need to toughen the non conference schedule up to develop the program. Stability will be key for Ferndale heading into next season. What should help is that the Eagles have a talented player in Keneisha Williams returning.

Pontiac: The Phoenix could be a team to watch next season under coach Christopher Wright. Pontiac is a team that still has athletes and things improving who knows what will happen next season. Expect the Phoenix to be a team worth watching.

Oak Park: The Knights will not have a lot of depth coming back even though Kyla Wilson will be back but coach Peggy Carr’s team will have some issues to address next season.

Southfield Arts and Tech/Saginaw Heritage Insight/Prediction.

Written Saturday March 23rd at 10:10 AM

The final day of the Girls Basketball season is upon us.

The Warriors have a chance to avenge their only loss of the season when they play Saginaw Heritage at Calvin College at 12:15 in the Division One State Final this afternoon.

The Hawks beat Southfield Arts and Tech early in the season 45-43 at Ypsilanti Arbor Prep back in December.

There is plenty of Division One talent on both teams, Saginaw Heritage whom is well coached under Vonnie DeLong has two Division One players in Shrine Strickland-Gills (Central Michigan,) Moriah Joiner (Michigan State,) and a future Division One player in Lauren Reed. Southfield Arts and Tech counters with two Division One players themselves in Sodell Barnes (Toledo) and Alexis Johnson (Marshall) along with a future Division One player in Cheyenne McEvans.

Joiner has been the leader for the Hawks including games where she took over against Midland Dow, Flint Carman Ainsworth, and Wayne Memorial. Joiner had a triple double against Wayne Memorial in the State semifinals and was very instrumental against Midland Dow in the regional finals.

The Warriors who played a brutal schedule went through Detroit Renaissance, Detroit Mumford, Warren Cousino, Grosse Pointe North, Lakeview, and Muskegon in the postseason. Southfield Arts and Tech has a balance group of five talented players in Barnes, Johnson, McEvans. The other two starters could be key in Kayonia Willis and Jasmine Worthy. The bench is a major concern for coach Michelle Marshall and her team, someone besides these five will need to step up if the Warriors want to take home their first State title.

Here are the keys advantages for each team.

GUARDS: ADVANTAGE: Saginaw Heritage: The Hawks have Joiner and an emerging guard in Reed whom are both capable of taking over games. The Warriors counter with Barnes and Willis along with McEvans who can play the wing. Willis is a game manager but will score if need too. However Saginaw Heritage has Joiner and Reed whom both can score anywhere and take a game over and that’s not to mention Mallory McCartney whom is more than capable of taking a game over herself. Joiner had a triple double against Wayne Memorial while Barnes took over the game late against Muskegon holding off the Big Reds. I give the advantage to the Hawks because of the scoring options.

FORWARDS: ADVANTAGE: Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors have the advantage here because of the two for one element. Strickland-Gills although very good has been prone to getting into foul trouble but Southfield Arts and Tech has Alexis Johnson and Jasmine Worthy. If the Warriors two bigs (especially Worthy, wouldn't be ideal for Johnson) stays out of foul trouble then she could focus on Strickland-Gills. If Strickland-Gills doesn't get into foul trouble and Worthy does than that could be problematic because she can focus on Johnson and Southfield Arts and Tech might have to go with an inexperience big in the post. If Strickland Gills does gets into foul trouble then things would be interesting.

BENCH: ADVANTAGE: Saginaw Heritage: The Hawks go about seven deep which was shown against Midland Dow and Wayne Memorial but they are more than capable to go more if need be. Saginaw Heritage has a freshman in Lauren Gunn whom is a three point shooter off the bench and was very instrumental against Wayne Memorial in the State semifinals. The Warriors only go six deep which is a major concern. If this game becomes a foul fest, advantage Hawks.

COACHING: ADVANTAGE: Southfield Arts and Tech: Michelle Marshall has been here before winning a State Championship in 2005 when she was at Southfield-Lathrup however Vonnie DeLong won a State title last season at Saginaw Heritage and has won one as a player as well. Marshall’s experience in these situations gives a slight edge here to the Warriors.

PREDICTION: Motivation is clearly on the Warriors side after what happened to them in December but Saginaw Heritage has been here before. I think Joiner and Barnes cancels each other along with Johnson and Strickland Gills and Cheyenne McEvans and Mallory McCartney do the same. If Jasmine Worthy stays out of foul trouble and produces on the offensive end then another State title for Marshall could be in the works along Southfield Arts and Tech’s first State title. This will be close and tight throughout. The Hawks are the defending State Champs for a reason and they have four talented players as mentioned. Mick McCabe and the folks at ESPN 100.9 FM are going with the Hawks so give me the Warriors. PICK: SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH 51, SAGINAW HERTIAGE 48.

There will be new Boys Basketball Coaches at Lake Orion and Avondale next season.

Written Monday March 18th at 10:30 PM

There will be a new coaches at Avondale and at Lake Orion next season for Boys Basketball.

Dragons coach Jim Manzo will retire from teaching and coaching in June. Manzo led Lake Orion to a district final appearance and competed in the Red this season.

According to Oakland Schools, the job was posted last week.

Manzo brought the Dragons back to relevance in his second stint back with the team. Lake Orion shared the Blue with Rochester with a 17-3 record in 2017-2018.

The Dragons went 13-9 this season in the tough Red losing to Oxford in the district finals at home.

Whomever the new coach is will have some talent coming back in the form of Jack Cummings, Isiah Harris, Cameron Sutton, Drew Van Heck, and Dylan Boedigheimer. Lake Orion will likely be in the Red next season after finishing tied with North Farmington for second place at 6-6.

Yellow Jackets coach Tim Morton has stepped down from coaching at Avondale to focus on his running his homegrown business next season. Morton led the Yellow Jackets to bit of a resurgence in his second stint back but this season was a struggle for his team.

Avondale will have some talent back next season but questions loom for this team. The Yellow Jackets finished at 9-13 in the tough White losing to Bloomfield Hills in the district semifinals.

We’ll keep an eye on both the coaching searches at Lake Orion and at Avondale.

Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.

Boys Basketball Shortcomings.

Written Sunday March 17th at 12:20 PM
Updated Sunday July 28th at 11:00 PM

Well the Boys Basketball season is over around the State and also in the OAA. Here are some of the storylines looking forward to next season. We are not including Harrison or Hazel Park for different reasons.

Here are the 21 storylines heading into next season.

Clarkston: The Wolves were a streaky team this season losing two straight to winning 17 straight games until getting upset by Adams The nucleus is back for coach Tim Wasilk’s team in Keegan Wasilk, Fletcher Loyer, and Matt Nicholson. Clarkston also got stronger with Blake Kosin likely filling a role along with Luke Scheler and that's not mentioning players like Mike Depillo, Isayah Harris, Connor McKouen, and Logan Forbes. The Wolves will be a tough team to beat next season.

Lake Orion: The Dragons had an up and down year winning 13 games last season. Lake Orion lost Jake Ryquist, Kyle Loken, Shayne Barkley, and Nate Talbot to graduation. The Dragons return several key pieces in Dylan Boedgheimer, Cameron Sutton, and Drew Van Heck for new coach Joel Schroeder. Schroeder takes over for coach Jim Manzo who is retired at the end of the school year. There will need to be certain areas that Lake Orion will need to improve on next season so that will be something worth watching.

North Farmington: The Raiders really overachieved with a very young group this season. North Farmington loses two seniors to graduation including Yusif Jihad. They have the majority of their team coming back next season including Eddie Lenton, Bahseer Jihad, Deon Hayes, and Jamal Hayes. Coach Todd Negoshian should be pretty good next season.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers are in an interesting spot next season. Coach Jeremy Dehna will see their star backcourt of Donovan Moore and Robert Johnson head to colleges next season but West Bloomfield has a ton of talent coming back led by Shameer Mathews, Jake Lanshaw, Chase Glover-Rogers, and Kipras Blazeviciux not to mention if Donovan Edwards comes back which would be a huge addition after missing the basketball season due to an injury he suffered in football. The Lakers could be a team to watch next season.

Oak Park: The Knights had a ton of distractions this season along with a ton of questions heading into next season. Oak Park has the majority of their team coming back including Fred Garland, Soloman Johnson, Jaylin Mines, and DeVontae Edwards. Coach Bobby Thompson will be in an interesting spot and another question will be is that will Maliq Carr come back and if he does then the Knights will be worth watching.

Bloomfield Hills: The Blackhawks have Mason Canfield and Colin Hecker returning next season for coach Phil Kurajian along with a solid three point shooting core. Bloomfield Hills will have some questions in the post next season. If they can address this issue then the Blackhawks will be a team to watch next season.

Troy: The Colts overachieved this season despite finishing with a 500 record and a district title. Troy loses a ton of talent but has Brody Parker returning for coach Gary Fralick. The Colts bring in the Emerzian brothers Jake and Ethan as they transferred from Adams. Ethan has played with Parker in AAU ball. Troy will be a team to watch in the White next season.

Adams: The Highlanders are going to be an interesting team to watch this offseason. There have been massive changes over at Adams with the possibility of Gunner Walters leaving the State and both the Emerzian boys officially departing to Troy. The Highlanders have a new coach in Jared Thomas as he takes over for coach Brad Crighton stepped down in April. Thomas will have to get his new team on the same page if they want to compete in the White.

Farmington: The Falcons had a strong season this year but a disappointing district semifinal loss to Novi Detroit Catholic Central. Farmington has three top players coming back including their guards Terrell Humes and Jadin Atkins to go along with Jack Donehue. Coach Terrance Porter will have this team locked and loaded heading into next season.

Groves: The Falcons had a great first season under coach Benny White but they had a lot of tough luck including four losses at the buzzer. Groves will be better next season with basically a young group led by Mark Watson, Adolphus Cast, and Devin White but they will be a team to watch.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors even though they had a successful first season under coach Darrell Buchanan but they lose Cameron McEvans which could hurt them. Southfield Arts and Tech has a strong junior varsity team coming up and added Amauri Bates from Southfield Christian. The Warriors will be an interesting team to watch next season.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars were near 500 this season but suffered a disappointing loss to Utica in the district semifinal but coach Steve Norgrove’s team returns Alex Reiter and Trevor Smith which will be a bonus. Stoney Creek will be a team to watch next season.

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets could be a team to watch this offseason. Avondale needs to address their post situation and they will have a new coach in Pat Clancy after coach Tim Morton stepped down in March. Clancy will inherit a team that's strength will be the guards whom are very athletic and talented. I think that moving down to the Blue should help the Yellow Jackets. It will be interesting to see what happens with this team.

Rochester: It was a rough season for coach Vance Kirkwood this year. The Falcons lose Corey Gulledge, Cameron Caggins, and Ryan Noble. Rochester has young group along with a solid freshman class. The Falcons will head down to the Blue next season.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks had a tough season but what will help coach Dave Scott is that they have a lot of talent coming back led by Jacob Thorton. Troy Athens who went 3-17 last year has moved down from the White to the Blue. They should be a contender in the league next season.

Oxford: The Wildcats had their best season EVER this season but next season will be interesting for Oxford. Coach Steve Laidlaw has Trey and Zach Townsend returning but they lose seven seniors from the team that went to the regional final which was their first appearance since 1948. The Wildcats had a good JV team but they will be a team worth watching.

Pontiac: The Phoenix made a return to prominence. Pontiac won 22 games including going 18-2 but lost to a very good New Haven team in the regional final. The Phoenix will be vastly different this upcoming season. They lost 10 seniors to graduation along with their head coach Joel Schroeder whom left for Lake Orion. Dameon Odneal returns to coach the team. He has prior experience with rebuilding jobs when he was at Waterford Kettering and has been an assistant to Schroeder and Robert Rogers. It will be tough to start from scratch again for Pontiac but they will have Terriah Hazard returning which helps whoever the new coach will be, they will be fine going forward.

Ferndale: The Eagles had a successful first season under coach Juan Rickman which resulted in a regional final appearance but they had a tough outcome against Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy where they had one bad quarter that cost them their season. Rickman has the majority of this team coming back next season led by Treyvon Lewis and the addition of three transfers in JayShawn Moore, Simon Wheeler, and Colin Golston who came from Detroit East English Village Prep and had to sit out this season. Ferndale will be a team to watch out for next season in the tough Red.

Berkley: The Bears made some strides this season getting to the district final and having a halftime lead against Birmingham Brother Rice. Coach Joe Sermo has some talent coming back which is a bonus to have. Berkley should be a sleeping giant in the Blue next season led by Ari Belchinsky and Arshad Walker.

Seaholm: The Maples were up and down this season and should be competitive next season. Coach Mike DeGeeter will have more experience with his team which will help them make some noise next season in the Blue.

Royal Oak: The Ravens were very disappointing this season and they do lose a ton of talent including Jovan Martin. Royal Oak has some questions they need to address next season. The Ravens do have the talent and defensive first mindset but offense will be a question for coach Aaron Smith’s team next season.

Warriors have Golden Oppertunity Awaiting Them.

Written Sunday March 17th at 12:00 PM

The Southfield Arts and Tech Warriors are ready for another State title run.

The Warriors have been clearly the league’s top team and ranked number one in the State has been through a lot this season.

As Southfield Arts and Tech prepares to play St. Clair Shores Lakeview on Tuesday at West Bloomfield, the road hasn’t been easy for the Warriors this season especially starting out early with a loss to defending State Champ Saginaw Heritage by two points.

Southfield Arts and Tech has played a brutal schedule playing the likes of Saginaw Heritage, Flint Carman Ainsworth, Midland Dow, Birmingham Detroit Country Day, and Ypsilanti Arbor Prep to name a few in the non conference. They also compete in the Red with the likes of Bloomfield Hills, Clarkston, Stoney Creek, Groves, North Farmington, and Royal Oak.

The district has not been easy for them either as they had to deal with Detroit Renaissance and Detroit Mumford, both teams they advanced by convincing margins. They hosted a tough regional that had the likes of Warren Cousino, Birmingham Marian, and Grosse Pointe North by beating the Patriots and Norsemen in the regional.

The key to this run has been coaching and a ton of credit has to go to legendary coach Michelle Marshall and her talented staff. Marshall coached at Southfield-Lathrup until the merger with Southfield High School back in 2016. She led the Chargers to the 2005 Class A State title.

Marshall has gotten the most and then some from her very talented team.

Southfield Arts and Tech does has some talent as mentioned which could be one of the best starting fives in the State.

The first is post Alexis Johnson, Johnson whom is a Marshall commit is a four year varsity player. She can score inside and out and has a ton of athleticism. Johnson has become truly the heart and soul of this Warriors team. She has had big games against quality competition thus far. Johnson did get hurt against Grosse Pointe North in the regional final but did return in that game. Marshall knows the importance of having Johnson on the floor because she is a big who can get whenever she wants.

The next one is Cheyenne McEvans, McEvans is a very talented player who can play both the guard and wing. She dribble drives, shoots the ball very well and has the capability of taking over games. McEvans had a 23 points, 22 rebound game at Royal Oak. McEvans is another player more than capable of playing at the next level.

The next one is Sodell Barnes, Barnes is a guard/forward whom transferred in from Ohio and is a Toledo commit. She was an all-state honorable mention last season. Barnes has made an impact this season and can play anywhere where it is at the guard spots or at the wing like McEvans. She has had games where she has taken over and has bought in to the Warriors way.

The next one is Kayonia Wills. Wills was a transfer from Detroit Renaissance and has really been a very good game manager from the point guard spot. She has had games where she hasn’t needed to score and what’s key to having a successful title run is you have to have a great game manager and Willis fits the bill perfectly.

The last one is Jasmine Worthy. Worthy transferred from Groves to play for Southfield Arts and Tech this season. She is big and lengthy whom block shots, rebound, and alter shots in the post. Worthy does have a bit of an outside game as well. She is more of a threat on the defensive end which helps the rest of the team not only to get into the fast break but controls the post out there.

The bench is a concern besides these five talented players play a ton of heavy minutes. There are some questions especially when they get into foul trouble. It has to be something that has to concern Marshall heading into the State quarterfinals and into the later rounds.

Looking Ahead.

Southfield Arts and Tech’s road will be interesting. The Warriors play St. Clair Shores Lakeview on Tuesday at West Bloomfield. The Huskies have a relativity young team but talented team for a reason. St. Clair Shores Lakeview beat Port Huron Northern in the regional final 46-37 which was the first ever crown. The Huskies will pose some trouble especially where Worthy is expected to have her hands full going up against 6.6 Joslyn Benson in the interior.  St. Clair Shores Lakeview has two sophomore starters in Tricia Sankiewicz and Kayla Austin along with seniors Julia Decker, Ri’Shyna Lewis, and Kelly Wandzel.

Both the Warriors and Huskies have played one common opponent in Stoney Creek. The Cougars lost to Southfield Arts and Tech in their only meeting while they beat St. Clair Shores Lakeview back in December.

If Southfield Arts and Tech were to advance past St. Clair Shores Lakeview then they would have to play either Muskegon or DeWitt at Calvin College. The Big Reds had a tough district and regional beating Muskegon Reeths Puffer, Grand Haven, East Kentwood, and Hudsonville and they have a very good player in Alyza Winston along with a very scrappy defense. DeWitt plays in the very competitive Capital Area Conference where they had to get by Caledonia, Grand Ledge, St. Johns, Portage Central, and Coldwater and they have a ton of talent led by Maddie Peterson.

If the Warriors get to Saturday then you’re looking at a rematch with the defending State Champion Saginaw Heritage in the State Finals. The Hawks are loaded with talent led by Division One players Mo Joiner and Shrine Strickland-Gills along with Lolo Reed. Saginaw Heritage has knocked off Flint Carman Ainsworth, Midland Dow, Flushing, Owosso, and Swartz Creek. Saginaw Heritage beat Southfield Arts and Tech 45-43 back in December but the Warriors are a much different and better team since that loss at Ypsilanti Arbor Prep.

It has been a magical run for Southfield Arts and Tech Girls Basketball but can they keep it up which will be the test this week.

Girls Basketball Regional Preview and Predictions.

Written Friday March 8th at 10:45 PM

Here is my insight and projections heading into the regionals with only two OAA teams left in West Bloomfield and Southfield Arts and Tech. Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest heading into the tournament.

Here are my thoughts and insight.

Region 2 @ Lakeland

WEST BLOOMFIELD vs Hartland
Waterford Kettering vs Walled Lake Western

THOUGHTS/INSIGHT: The Lakers whom won not only the White but also their district for the first time since 1999 at home over Bloomfield Hills, Waterford Mott, and Avondale but this regional will be a huge challenge for coach Bert Mosley’s team. West Bloomfield will have to deal with a very good Hartland team that features Whitney Sollom whom has been a double-double machine lately and won a district that featured Howell, Holly, Fenton, and Linden. Waterford Kettering won a competitive district that had Lake Orion, Adams, Oxford, Romeo, and Clarkston. The Captains bring a ton of experience with them led by Markayla Holland, Claire Braghahn, Ashley Watson, Irene Schoof, and Izzy Dugal. Walled Lake Western whom has a ton of talent themselves led by Kailee Ford and are well coached under former Oxford coach Steve Emert. The Warriors won the Lakes Valley Conference regular season crown and their district which had Walled Lake Northern, Walled Lake Central, Lakeland, and Milford.

PREDICTION: If the Lakers can survive Hartland which will be a very tough task then they will likely have to deal with Walled Lake Western in a rematch which could be almost beyond impossible but then again I can’t doubt this team though but as mentioned it will be a tough task. The Warriors should handle Waterford Kettering even though it is hard to beat a team three times in one season which Walled Lake Western will have if they can beat the Captains. At the end of the day though I see a rematch between Hartland and the Warriors but it will be the same result. PICK: HARTLAND.

Region 7 @ Southfield Arts and Tech

SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH vs Warren Cousino
Grosse Pointe North vs Birmingham Marian

THOUGHTS/INSIGHT: This is an interesting regional because there is a ton of star power in this regional and the top two teams in the State, a final four team from last season, and a State title team from two years ago are here as well. The Warriors have Alexis Johnson, Soldel Barnes, Cheyenne McEvans, and Kayonia Willis for coach Michelle Marshall. Grosse Pointe North has Michigan State bound Julia Ayrsult. Warren Cousino has Kate McArthur. Birmingham Marian who beat Berkley and Royal Oak in districts has Olivia Moore and a young core for coach Mary Cicerone.

PREDICTION: Home court WILL matter in this district despite Southfield Arts and Tech losing at home in the past but this is a different Warriors team though with a ton of experience and on a mission. I see a Southfield Arts and Tech vs Birmingham Marian regional final and as mentioned home court matters and the Warriors will live another day. PICK: SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH.

Boys Basketball Regional Preview and Predictions.

Written Saturday March 2nd at 12:10 PM

Here are my projections and insight heading into the regional tournament for the four remaining OAA teams in the postseason.

Region 8 @ New Baltimore Anchor Bay

TROY vs Roseville
New Baltimore Anchor Bay vs Chippewa Valley

THOUGHTS/INSIGHT: This is a predominately Macomb County regional but the Colts are here. Troy has a tough matchup with Roseville looming in the regional semifinals. The winner will likely see Anchor Bay whom has home court or Chippewa Valley whom has been a 500 team all season long.

PREDICTION: I see this being a Roseville vs Anchor Bay regional final but it will be Roseville that moves on. PICK: ROSEVILLE.

Region 2 @ Howell

OXFORD vs Milford
Orchard Lake St. Marys vs Howell

THOUGHTS/INSIGHT: This will be an interesting regional in Howell. The Wildcats won a tough district that included the likes of Clarkston, Lake Orion, and Adams while Orchard Lake St. Marys won a district that had West Bloomfield, Avondale, and Bloomfield Hills. Howell won their district and Milford won theirs that had Lakeland and Walled Lake Northern in there.

PREDICTION: This is setting up to be an Oxford vs Orchard Lake St. Marys regional final. I don’t think the Wildcats have an answer for their guards BUT the Eaglets don’t have an answer for Tre Townsend or Michael Rasich. I like Oxford to get to the quarterfinals. PICK: OXFORD.

Region 15 @ Livonia Clarenceville

FERNDALE vs Detroit Fredrick Douglass
Detroit Henry Ford vs Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy

THOUGHTS/INSIGHT: This will be an interesting regional in Wayne County. The Eagles are here and have played a tough schedule. Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy had a tough district and overcoming Harper Woods. Detroit Henry Ford and Detroit Fredrick Douglass won relatively not strong districts.

PREDICTION: I see a Ferndale vs Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy regional final but too much athletes the Eagles have along with playing in the OAA will get Ferndale to the quarterfinals. PICK: FERNDALE.

Region 16 @ Imlay City

PONTIAC vs Croswell-Lexington
New Haven vs Goodrich

THOUGHTS/INSIGHT: This is an interesting regional in Lapeer County but the likelihood of a possible clash between Pontiac and New Haven looms large but Croswell-Lexington and Goodrich will pose problems to both teams. Croswell Lexington won their district along with Goodrich. Pontiac took a tough district that had Birmingham Detroit Country Day and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood.

PREDICTION: This will be an interesting regional final between Pontiac and New Haven but unfortunately it will be too much Romeo Weems and New Haven moving on. PICK: NEW HAVEN.

Girls Basketball District Preview.

Written Friday March 1st at 11:10 AM

Hello to all and a happy March which means March Madness. Anyway here is my insight and storylines heading into the Girls Basketball districts which starts on Monday. Also hear the podcast on OAA Now next week previewing the Girls Basketball districts.

District 6 at Lake Orion

OXFORD vs. Waterford Kettering
LAKE ORION vs. Romeo
OXFORD/Waterford Kettering vs. CLARKSTON
LAKE ORION/Romeo vs. ADAMS

FAVORITE: Waterford Kettering
NEXT: Romeo
DARKHORSE: Clarkston
PLAYER TO WATCH: Claire Braghahn-Waterford Kettering

Top Storylines:

It’s time to believe in Oxford.

The Wildcats have had a strong season thus far finishing at 15-5. Oxford has wins over Lake Orion, West Bloomfield, Troy, and Adams. Coach Rachel Bryer has experience which is a huge bonus in Ashley Hershman, Hayla Cato, Gabby Dinges, Mackenzie Methner, among others. Could the Wildcats beat Waterford Kettering in the predistrict??? Absolutely, the Captains have not had the usual strong seasons they have had despite playing a tough non conference schedule and have a first year coach in Cory Hightower. Waterford Kettering has proven talented players in Ashley Watson, Claire Braghan, Markayla Holland, Irene Schoof, Izzy Dugal, Kate Frasier, and Bianca Kaiser but in districts anything is possible.

Clarkston has improved dramatically.

I give coach John Weyer a ton of credit for trusting the process with his young team. Clarkston started the season at 0-5 and finished 11-9 this season. The Wolves are gaining confidence despite playing a really brutal schedule which included the likes of Ypsilanti Arbor Prep, Chandler Park Academy, Warren Cousino, and Walled Lake Western. Clarkston has one starter back in Taylor Heaten from the team that went to the State quarterfinals last season. The Wolves have wins over proven programs in Stoney Creek, Bloomfield Hills, North Farmington. Win or lose in this district, they are built for the future and is getting better each day.

Lake Orion has questions.

The Dragons have doubled their win total from a year ago going 8-12 but questions remain for coach Bob Brydges and his team. Lake Orion does not have a go to scorer which helps and hinders a team at the same time and they are playing the Macomb Area White division champions Romeo in the pre-district. If Paytin Shadaia and Sophie Wyborski can make their names in this tournament then maybe the Dragons could make an impact. It has been rough for Lake Orion with Brydges being the team’s fourth coach in four years but changing a culture is not easy. The Dragons need Wyborski and Shadaia to be at their best if they want to contend in this district.

Adams is a team to watch.

The Highlanders are a young team for coach Shay Lewis despite finishing 9-11 this season features a young nucleus in Maddie Dolengia, Lauren Petersmark, Abbey Draghnak, Nicole Clarehout, Aniah Howard, and Amelia Draghnak. Adams has been an interesting team to figure out as they have wins over Lake Orion, Troy, Waterford Mott, and Groves but they have some head scratching losses to Troy Athens and Utica. It will be interesting to see which Highlanders team shows up in this district.

District 7 at West Bloomfield

WEST BLOOMFIELD vs. AVONDALE
BLOOMFIELD HILLS vs. NORTH FARMINGTON
WEST BLOOMFIELD/AVONDALE vs. Waterford Mott

FAVORITE: Bloomfield Hills
NEXT: West Bloomfield
DARKHORSE: Avondale
PLAYER TO WATCH: Maryiam Hashim-Bloomfield Hills

Top Storylines:

West Bloomfield has some questions.

The Lakers have the talent to make a run at the district along with home court but what bothers me with West Bloomfield is that they didn’t look good against Oxford where they lost 54-38 despite winning the White finishing at 17-2 on the season. The Lakers have Mya Bobo, Jada Grady, Logan Lewis, MiKayla Duncan, Ikia Elam, and Lola Chambers. It’s important for coach Bert Mosley to let that loss go and focus on districts. It will be interesting to see where West Bloomfield is at heading into the tournament.

Bloomfield Hills will be a tough out.

The Blackhawks have been an odd team to figure out. They are not consistent which is something that bothers coach Jeff Rubin (Groves, lost 44-34) finishing with a 10-10 record. Maryiam Hashim, Jordan Banks, Angelina Savaya, and Grace Getz will carry Bloomfield Hills into the district tournament and they have a great draw drawing North Farmington who has had a rough season. The Blackhawks will be a team to watch and which team shows up.

Avondale could spoil things???

The Yellow Jackets are an interesting team to keep an eye on in this district. Avondale whom went 18-2 this season has the talent to compete in this district led by Reigan Lawrence, Keori Lee, and McDonalds All American Olivia Russell. What should be interesting for coach Bob Lees is can they go on the road and beat West Bloomfield. The Lakers have beaten the Yellow Jackets twice and it’s always hard to beat a team three times in one season. Avondale is in an interesting spot because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Where does North Farmington go from here???

The Raiders have had a rough season going 2-18, not winning a game in the Red but the postseason could bring a clean slate for coach Jeff Simpson and his team. North Farmington has some talented players in Maya Kelly and Molly Simpson but as mentioned post play has been a challenge for this team. The Raiders play Bloomfield Hills in the district semifinal and it's always hard to beat a team three times in one season. North Farmington has lost twice to the Blackhawks so that will be interesting to see what happens.

District 18 at Novi

Northville vs. Livonia Stevenson
FARMINGTON vs. Novi
Northville/Livonia Stevenson vs. Farmington Hills Mercy

FAVORITE: Farmington Hills Mercy
NEXT: Northville
DARKHORSE: Farmington
PLAYER TO WATCH: Iasia Rampson-Farmington

Top Storylines:

Does Farmington have a chance???

It could be a tough chore for the Falcons if they want to make some noise in this district despite finishing at 2-18 this season with basically a young group. Farmington Hills Mercy is very good and has experience for coach Gary Morris. Northville has had a nice season as well and the Mustangs figure to be a tough out. Coach Laura Guzman’s team got a good draw drawing a very young Novi team but the Wildcats did beat Northville during the season. It will be interesting to see if the Falcons have a shot in this district.

District 28 at Birmingham Marian

SEAHOLM vs. GROVES
BERKLEY vs. Birmingham Marian
SEAHOLM/GROVES vs. ROYAL OAK

FAVORITE: Birmingham Marian
NEXT: Royal Oak
DARKHORSE: Berkley
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sarah Soraghan-Royal Oak

Top Storylines:

Can Royal Oak win this district without Jessica Adams???

The Ravens have had a strong season for coach Brian Sopota going 18-2 this year with a veteran heavy team. Things were looking smooth until Jessica Adams injured her knee against Stoney Creek. They have overcame her injury thus far but can they get by Birmingham Marian on the road likely in the district final pending if both teams win their respective matchups. Royal Oak lost to the Mustangs last season in the district final at Birmingham Marian and without Adams it will be very tough. The Ravens still have Samantha Potter in the post but if they can get guard play from Nila Conley and Sarah Soraghan then it could be interesting.

Can Birmingham Marian keep this up???

The Mustangs literally went with a young lineup that has grown up which has pleased coach Mary Cicerone and that’s not mentioning Olivia Moore either whom is an outstanding talent in her part. Birmingham Marian whom is ranked second in the State is the favorite in this district because of home court and they won the Catholic League crown this season.  It will be interesting to see who steps up to the plate and challenges the Mustangs district reign.

Can Berkley pull of the upset???

The Bears shared the Blue title with Rochester with an 35-33 upset of the Falcons on the road and went 16-4 this season. Coach Kirk Carolan has a veteran laden team which is a bonus. If things go right they could upset Birmingham Marian in the district semifinal but it will be a tough chore especially with the experience that the Mustangs have and the league they play in the Catholic League along with home court to boot. It’s going to be a tough one for Berkley.

Can Seaholm turn it around???

The Maples have had an interesting season under first year coach Chris Manchester but Seaholm has lost four straight games and they face a Groves team that has won two straight including an upset of Bloomfield Hills. The Maples finished at 8-11 but have lost four straight as mentioned heading into this matchup. I remember two seasons ago Seaholm upset Groves when the Falcons went 18-2, could an upset happen in this district???

District 25 at Detroit Mumford

Detroit Mumford vs. Redford Union
SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH vs. Detroit Renaissance
Detroit Mumford/Redford Union vs. OAK PARK

FAVORITE: Southfield Arts and Tech
NEXT: Detroit Mumford
DARKHORSE: Detroit Renaissance
PLAYER TO WATCH: Tiera Earnest-Detroit Mumford

Top Storylines:

Southfield Arts and Tech gaining confidence each game.

The Warriors have earned the State's top ranking and for good reason. Southfield Arts and Tech has played a tough schedule which included the likes of State powers Saginaw Heritage, Flint Carman Ainsworth, Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Ypsilanti Arbor Prep and league foes Stoney Creek, Clarkston, Bloomfield Hills and Royal Oak. They are loaded with future college talent in Soldel Barnes, Cheyenne McEvans, Alexis Johnson, and Kaynoia Willis. Coach Michelle Marshall has said that her team is playing the best basketball right now which helps heading into this very tough district at Detroit Mumford.

Detroit Mumford a different team right now.

The Mustangs are the two time defending Detroit Public School League champions and have been a different team lately. Detroit Mumford has home court and some very talented players led by Tiera Earnest, Aujane Horton, and Adoreya Williams for coach Kareem Hogan. The Mustangs have a great draw as well either meeting Southfield Arts and Tech or Detroit Renaissance in the district final. They have things heading in the right direction.

Detroit Renaissance a trap game for Southfield Arts and Tech???

The Phoenix have had a good season but they did not win the Detroit Public School League this season but they will be a tough out and a tough matchup for Southfield Arts and Tech in the district semifinal. Detroit Renaissance has their own fair share of talent led by Kaliee Davis among others. The Phoenix is a team that no one wants to see especially if they have a good night shooting.

Does Oak Park have a chance???

The Knights have had a tough season finishing at 8-9 this year but coach Peggy Evans and her team has nothing to lose in this tough district. Oak Park picked up a huge win over Seaholm 69-61 but lost a tough one to Berkley 48-47 last week. The Knights can score as they have shown in their last two games but can they defend is the question and especially in this tough district where they are likely to see Detroit Mumford in the district semifinals. It will be tough for the Knights.

District 29 at Utica

STONEY CREEK vs. Utica
TROY vs. Utica Eisenhower
STONEY CREEK/Utica vs. ROCHESTER

FAVORITE: Stoney Creek
NEXT: Utica Eisenhower
DARKHORSE: Troy
PLAYER TO WATCH: Lily DiPani-Stoney Creek

Top Storylines:

Can Stoney Creek snap out of their funk???

The Cougars have been in a rut lately trying to fix things before the postseason starts. Stoney Creek has lost lost five of their last seven games finishing with a 10-9 record. It’s a major concern heading into this district for coach Kellen James with his team reeling a bit but if there is a team that can get out a rut it's this one. The Cougars have the talent to break out of this funk in Lily DiPani, Emily Eckhout, Devin Vowels, Meghan Solek, and Maria St. Louis. Stoney Creek has a tough predistrict matchup looming with Utica whom has been playing better and has home court in their small gym. If the Cougars can snap out of this funk then they will be dangerous heading into this district.

Troy a player???

The Colts are a team worth watching in this tournament. Troy went 11-9 this season and have been around 500 which isn't good but not bad either. Coach Simon Bato's team features some key players in Kendal Zeiter, Athena Sampson, and Emily Olson. The Colts have a tough matchup with Utica Eisenhower in the small gym of Utica in the district semifinal. I’m curious how Troy responds to playing in a small gym so we’ll see if they are for real or not.

Utica Eisenhower is dangerous.

The Eagles were district champs last season and has Lauren DeBeau back for coach Mike Satawa but it hasn’t been easy this season for Utica Eisenhower. The Eagles went 13-7 and was near the bottom of the Macomb Area Red this season but the postseason is a different animal and a new season makes Utica Eisenhower a very good darkhorse candidate.

Where does Rochester stand???

The Falcons have had a rebirth in the Blue sharing the crown with Berkley despite starting the season at 1-5 before going 11-3 the rest of the way finishing at 12-8. Rochester is in an interesting spot with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Coach Jeff Haney has this team heading in the right direction even with the very talented Tori Hawkins. It will be interesting to see where the Falcons are at heading into this district.

District 30 at Troy Athens

Chippewa Valley vs. Sterling Heights Stevenson
TROY ATHENS vs. Utica Ford II
Chippewa Valley/Sterling Heights Stevenson vs. Sterling Heights

FAVORITE: Troy Athens
NEXT: Utica Ford II
DARKHORSE: Chippewa Valley
PLAYER TO WATCH: Izzy Krumm-Troy Athens

Top Storylines:

Could this be Troy Athens best shot at district crown???

The Red Hawks have had a rough season finishing at 5-14 this year. There are some advantages though competing in the White against the likes of West Bloomfield, Avondale, Lake Orion, Oxford, Troy, and Adams along with playing Farmington Hills Mercy to open up the season should help coach Stacie Klumpp’s team heading into the tournament. Troy Athens also hosts this district which is a huge bonus as well. The Red Hawks have a tough matchup in the district semifinals against Utica Ford II but it will be interesting to see what happens but they have a shot to win this district.

Utica Ford II should challenge.

The Falcons should challenge for the district crown despite finishing at 9-11 this season. Utica Ford II has played a tough schedule playing the likes of Romeo, Utica, and Port Huron in the Macomb Area White division. Coach Matt Joseph has a solid player in Olivia Kubik that could do some damage. Out of the teams in this district the Falcons stand the best chance to beat Troy Athens.

District 61 at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep vs. Clawson
PONTIAC vs. Birmingham Detroit Country Day
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep/Clawson vs. Wixom St. Catherine Sienna Academy
PONTIAC/Birmingham Detroit Country Day vs. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood

FAVORITE: Birmingham Detroit Country Day
NEXT: Wixom St. Catherine Sienna Academy
DARKHORSE: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sarah Stuart-Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Top Storylines:

Can anyone beat Birmingham Detroit Country Day???

The Yellow Jackets have had a season of ups and downs finishing around 500 (8-8 this season) but the postseason brings different challenges which should be a bonus. Birmingham Detroit Country Day has played a very tough schedule going up against well known State powers in Detroit Edison, Saginaw Heritage, Pewamo-Westphalia, Southfield Arts and Tech, and Midland Dow. The Yellow Jackets have the talent to make a run. It will be a tough challenge past the district round as coach Frank Orlando’s team will have to deal with Detroit Edison sooner than later.

Where does Pontiac stand???

The Phoenix are an interesting team but they have been competitive recently which is a bonus for coach Christopher Wright and his team. Pontiac finished the season at 10-8 heading into their tough matchup with Birmingham Detroit Country Day. The Phoenix though haven’t played the strongest of schedules so that does hurt them. Pontiac will be an interesting team to keep an eye on in this district.

Wixom St. Catherine Sienna Academy is a wildcard???

The Stars have had a great season going 15-5 which included a major victory in the Catholic League tournament over Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. They have a boatload of talent and have been very successful thus far. The experience and tough schedule could pose problems for teams they face in this district including possibly Birmingham Detroit Country if they see them. It will be interesting to see where Wixom St. Catherine Sienna is at but they are a team to take notice.

District 60 at Hazel Park

Warren Lincoln vs. Ferndale University
HAZEL PARK vs. Center Line
Warren Lincoln/Ferndale University vs. FERNDALE
HAZEL PARK/Center Line vs. Madison Heights Lamphere

FAVORITE: Center Line
NEXT: Warren Lincoln
DARKHORSE: Madison Heights Lamphere
PLAYER TO WATCH: Camryn Gibbs-Center Line

Top Storylines:

Will Hazel Park contend???

It’s been a tough year for the Vikings. Hazel Park is in their final season in the OAA is not deep and have been giving up a ton of points, that’s been a big reason why coach Chad Ossman's team went 3-16 this season but they beat Madison Heights Lamphere 35-34 in their last game of the regular season and has home court which could help the Vikings in the district despite having a tough matchup looming with Center Line in the predistrict.

Will Ferndale also contend???

The Eagles have had a rough way to close out the season for coach Christina Nagle and her team. Ferndale has lost eight of their last 10 games (both wins came against Hazel Park) heading into the tournament and finishing at 5-14. It could be a rough ride for both the Eagles as they are likely to see Warren Lincoln in this district and that one could be interesting.

Center Line a favorite???

The Panthers have had an odd season going 11-9 this season for coach Laura Miskelly but 3-6 in the Macomb Area Gold division. They had a ton of experience back and are stout defensively but the offense could be better despite averaging 40 points per game. Center Line will need to score more in this district if they want to win it.

Warren Lincoln is in an interesting spot.

The Abes have had an up and down season finishing at 10-8 but there have been some concerns surrounding this team particularly on the defensive end. Warren Lincoln has allowed 42 points per game which is a concern coming into the tournament but they did get a good draw which should help them. The Abes had a good league record (played in the Macomb Area Conference Bronze division) with both of their losses to New Haven. Warren Lincoln will be a team to watch in this tournament.
