Farmington has their new Boys Basketball Coach.

Written Wednesday August 4th at 4:30 PM

The Falcons have their new boys basketball coach.

Farmington named Derrick McDowell as their new head coach. He replaces Terrance Porter whom stepped down back in June.

McDowell is a very decorated basketball coach to say the least.

"I'm very excited, very fortune, to get a coach of his quality to take over a quality program" said Farmington Athletic Director Tim Micklash said.

McDowell was a very successful high school coach at Detroit Redford. He was 194-70 at Detroit Redford and led them to two State final appearances and turned that program into a powerhouse.

McDowell spent some time in the college game. He was at Eastern Michigan as their associate head coach from 2005-2011 including a time where he was the interim coach. McDowell was also an assistant at Central Michigan from 1991-1993.

After McDowell left Eastern Michigan he went to Detroit Western. He coached the Cowboys from 2011 until 2020 which included a perfect season when they won the 2015 Class A State title.

McDowell took a year off coaching but when the Falcons job came up he accepted.

McDowell will have a challenge ahead of him at Farmington. They have Zion Carroll and Jalen Silver coming back. The Falcons are in the always tough Red with the likes of Clarkston, Ferndale, West Bloomfield, Oak Park, Adams, and North Farmington. The Falcons are in a very tough district which has North Farmington, Southfield Arts and Tech, Livonia Stevenson, and Redford Union.

Program strength is a major concern but Micklash said that McDowell loves rebuilds real quickly and believes this is a program that can rebound real quick. "One thing is a strength is that he build our programs back up getting the interest from the lower levels. I'm very excited" Micklash concluded.

Thoughts

This is a home run hire that Micklash made especially with the championship pedigree that McDowell brings. He is a proven winner and has been very successful whether its at the college or in the high school game. Farmington will be a huge challenge but if McDowell can do the same thing he did in the past then Farmington could be a player again in the near future.
