Softball Regional Preview

Written Sunday June 6th at 1:15 AM

Here is my insight and projections heading into the softball regionals this weekend.

Region 1 @ Bay City Central

OXFORD vs Fenton

Midland vs Traverse City West

INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is setting up to be a very interesting regional at Bay City Central. Fenton won a district that wasn’t that strong over Swartz Creek and Flushing and winning both of them by a combined six innings and 30-0. The Tigers will take on a much tougher opponent in Oxford in the first game of the regional semifinals. The Wildcats were an honorable mention in the state themselves during the season but had a very tough district to win. They survived Holly in the district semifinals and Davison (whom beat Grand Blanc and Lapeer in the district semifinals and district finals and were also honorable mentions in the state) to get to this regional. Oxford has had a much tougher path this season. The other regional semifinal features Midland and Traverse City West. The Chemics really haven't been that battle tested heading into this regional. They outscored Saginaw Heritage, Midland Dow, and Bay City Western by a combined 30-0 in their district at Bay City Western. The Titans went north and east on M-32 to Alpena to win their district. They beat the host Wildcats and Mount Pleasant by a combined 13-4 in the district semifinals and district finals. I can see this regional going two ways it could be close but they could be blowouts. I'm seeing a possible Oxford vs Midland regional final. The Wildcats have played a much tougher schedule than the Chemics. I think Oxford is going to shock the state and get to the quarterfinals by winning their first ever regional. PICK: OXFORD.

Region 6 @ Royal Oak

BERKLEY vs Warren Regina

St. Clair Shores Lakeview vs St. Clair Shores Lake Shore

INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This looks to be a very interesting two games in Royal Oak. Berkley is riding high after blowout wins over Southfield Arts and Tech and Detroit Renaissance on their home field by a combined 26-1 in the district semifinal and district finals. The Bears will be tested against a very good Satellites squad in the regional semifinals. Warren Regina has been living up to their state ranking. The Satellites outscored Sterling Heights and Warren Cousino by a combined 27-6 in the district semifinals and district finals. On the other side of the regional features two rivals from St Clair Shores in the Huskies and the Shorians. St. Clair Shores Lakeview was dominant in their district outscoring both Grosse Pointe North and Warren Woods Tower by a combined 25-3 in the district semifinals and district finals. St. Clair Shores Lake Shore had a much tougher time in their district where they beat Roseville in the district semifinals and had to survive Fraser in the district finals. The Huskies and the Shorians are rivals in the MAC despite being in different divisions. I don’t see anyone though beating Warren Regina in this regional. PICK: WARREN REGINA.

Region 7 @ Lakeland

GROVES vs CLARKSTON

Farmington Hills Mercy vs Walled Lake Northern

INSIGHT/PROJECTION: Clarkston has had it very rough in the regular season where they lost a ton of games but they look like a much different team in the postseason. The Wolves rolled in their district with wins over Waterford Kettering and Avondale by outscoring both teams by a combined 17-3 in the district semifinals and district finals. Clarkston plays Groves in which will be an interesting matchup in the regional semifinals. The Falcons are riding a ton of confidence coming into this game. They outscored Bloomfield Hills and West Bloomfield by a combined 30-9 in the district semifinals and district finals to get to the regional. On the other side there is Farmington Hills Mercy. The Marlins beat Novi in the district semifinals and Farmington in the district finals at Livonia Stevenson to get to this regional. Walled Lake Northern had to beat Walled Lake Western and survive Lakeland and Walled Lake Central to get to this regional. I’m seeing being a possible Clarkston vs Farmington Hills Mercy regional finals with the Marlins moving onto the quarterfinals. PICK: FARMINGTON HILLS MERCY.

Region 8 @ Utica Ford

STONEY CREEK vs Utica

New Baltimore Anchor Bay vs Macomb Dakota

INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is shaping up to be a very interesting regional at Utica Ford. The second game in the regional semifinals features two state ranked teams in New Baltimore Anchor Bay and Macomb Dakota. The Tars and the Cougars know each other really well going against each other in the MAC Red. Macomb Dakota beat Macomb L'Anse Creuse North and Chippewa Valley by a combined 11-1 in the district semifinals and district finals to get to the regionals. New Baltimore Anchor Bay had to beat Port Huron in the district semifinals Romeo in the district finals to get to this regional. Stoney Creek is a rising upstart all season long. They beat Lake Orion in the district semifinals and Adams in the district finals to get to this regional. Utica is a very interesting team seeing that stats. The Chieftains scored a combined 29 runs against Troy the district semifinals and Utica Eisenhower in the district finals. I see though a Cougars vs Tars regional final with New Baltimore Anchor Bay moving onto the quarterfinals. PICK: NEW BALTIMORE ANCHOR BAY.
