Boys Basketball District Preview.

Written Wednesday February 28th at 2:30 PM
Updated Saturday March 3rd at 12:15 AM

These are my insight and projections for the Boys Basketball Districts that are to take place on Monday March 5th with the Pre-District, Wednesday March 7th for the semifinals and Friday March 9th for the finals. Here are my insight and projections for each district.

This article will be updated with the updated information.

District 50 @ Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep vs Macomb Lutheran North
PONTIAC vs New Haven
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep/Macomb Lutheran North vs Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood
PONTIAC/New Haven vs Algonac

INSIGHT: This is an interesting district to look at when you look at the teams. New Haven will come north into this district fresh off winning the Class B State title last season. Pontiac comes down from Class A while everyone else here from Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Macomb Lutheran North, Algonac, and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood know each other quite well. The Irish have had a decent season thus far. Algonac, Macomb Luteran North, and Pontiac have had tough seasons. The two top teams in this district will be the teams to keep an eye on.

FAVORITE: New Haven: Anytime you have a player like Romeo Weems whom is getting multiple Division One College looks then you should be the favorite heading into this district. The Rockets so far are undefeated and have not looked back. New Haven looks to be a tough out heading into this district.

TEAM TO WATCH FOR: Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood: The Cranes have had a strong bounce back season winning the Catholic League crown in Class C-D for that. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood has won 18 games thus far and will look to have some postseason success this season.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Tim Hauxwell-Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood: Hauxwell is a big body needing to score if need be. He can make a name for himself if he has a strong tournament. Expect Hauxwell at times needing to put the Cranes on his back at times.

PROJECTION: I think this will be a New Haven vs Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood final but end of the day too much Weems and the Rockets move on. PICK: NEW HAVEN.

District 49 @ Birmingham Detroit Country Day

Ferndale University vs Clawson
Madison Heights Lamphere vs Center Line
Ferndale University/Clawson vs FERNDALE
Madison Heights Lamphere/Center Line vs Birmingham Detroit Country Day

INSIGHT: This district is not as strong as people think with one team having a winning record heading into this district. Madison Heights Lamphere, Center Line, Ferndale University, Ferndale, and Clawson have had tough seasons. Birmingham Detroit Country Day has had a bounce back season and is poise to make some noise in the tournament. Wonder if anyone else could make some noise in the district.

FAVORITE: Birmingham Detroit Country Day: The Yellow Jackets are loaded with talent led by Wendell Green for coach Mike Bray. Birmingham Detroit Country Day is also at home, which helps a lot as well. A lot of things favor the Yellow Jackets here.

TEAM TO WATCH OUT FOR: Ferndale: The Eagles chances would had been much better if Deandre Bonaparte didn't transfer to Ecorse but anyway coach Tom Staten's junior heavy team will contend in this district because of players like Keelen Lucas, Teona McKeithen, Brian Pozolo, and Will Scott. Ferndale might be the best team in this district to possibly dethrone Birmingham Detroit Country Day.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Wendell Green-Birmingham Detroit Country Day: This is Green's chance to make some noise for the Yellow Jackets. If Green does then he could be a force especially heading into the later rounds of the tournament. He is getting College looks and looks the part of a Division One prospect.

PROJECTION: I think this will be a Ferndale vs Birmingham Detroit Country Day final here with the hosts moving on. PICK: BIRMINGHAM DETROIT COUNTRY DAY.

District 22 @ Detroit Renaissance

BERKLEY vs Detroit Renaissance
Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit vs Warren Fitzgerald
BERKLEY/Detroit Renaissance vs OAK PARK
Warren Fitzgerald/Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit vs HAZEL PARK

INSIGHT: This is an interesting district with all of these teams at 500 or better. Hazel Park is a dangerous team that has played a tough schedule. Oak Park won the White crown. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit won the Catholic League A-B crown. Detroit Renaissance is one of the toughest teams in the Detroit Public School League and is the host in the district. Berkley has had a strong start but has lost 10 of it's last 11 games. Warren Fitzgerald is a Macomb County contender as well. This will be a very tough district

FAVORITE: Hazel Park: The senior heavy Vikings have played all comers this season and is not afraid to bring it on despite the fact that they are a small team but they are athletic as well. Hazel Park has Carl Bow, David Hearns, and Devin Pettus leading the charge for coach Brendan Barrett's team. The Vikings believe they can win this tough district because of the schedule they have played and the opportunists they await.

TEAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Oak Park, Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit, Detroit Renaissance: There are plenty of teams to watch out for in this district that can beat the favorite. Oak Park has the talent to compete with anyone, led by Maliq Carr. Detroit University-Detroit with the talent they have back led by Zach Winston, Elijah Collins and the newly returned Jalen Thomas. Detroit Renaissance is the host in this district and the Phoenix are talented as well.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Zach Winston-Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit: Winston is the younger brother of Cassius whom is at Michigan State. He has been playing well lately for coach Pat Connely's Cubs team. Winston could be the difference maker that could make or break Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit's season.

PROJECTION: I think there are four teams that have great shots of winning this district. Hazel Park has played a brutal schedule. Oak Park has been red hot on route to a White title. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit is getting things together. Detroit Renaissance will be hungry as well. There will be plenty of tense drama in this district. I thought it over after my podcast on Tuesday. I originally picked Hazel Park to win this district on the podcast. After the show, I thought about the Vikings odds and didn't think they would get by the Cubs in a rematch with Thomas back. I see an Oak Park/Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit final in Wayne County with the Cubs moving to the next round. PICK: DETROIT UNIVERSITY-DETROIT JESUIT.

District 21 @ Southfield Arts and Tech

NORTH FARMINGTON vs SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH
HARRISON vs FARMINGTON
NORTH FARMINGTON/SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH vs GROVES

INSIGHT: This is a wide open district when you look at the teams. There are no champions in each of the leagues these teams are in this season. Despite being at home, Southfield Arts and Tech is still a young team led by Cameron McEvans whom could be a darkhorse impact player in this district. North Farmington and Southfield Arts and Tech played in the Red. Groves in the White. Harrison and Farmington played in the Blue. The Hawks play a Detroit Public School League type of game and is led by Trey Walker, Brandon Cotton, Eddie Lenton, Ken Wesley, and Chris Rexroth. This one could be an interesting district to keep an eye on.

FAVORITE: North Farmington: This one was a tough one to pick because the Raiders are playing better despite going 8-12 this season. They do own wins over Farmington and Harrison. North Farmington is a very young team led by Justin Salaam, Yusuf Jahid, and Donny Dreshaj. The Raiders are well coached by the legendary Negoshian family led by Todd. If there is a team not to bet against it's North Farmington.

TEAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Groves,  Farmington: There are two sets of Falcons to watch for in this district in the green and gold and the blue and white. The blue and white ones are very talented led by Ray Bryant, Christian Smith, and freshman Terron Humes and Jared Atkins. The green and gold is led by Ollie Rasheed for coach Mark West. Groves has been inconsistent but seems like they are getting their act together at the right time.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Jared Atkins-Farmington: Atkins is only a freshman that not a lot of people know about. Atkins has had a strong season for Farmington, including a 36 point game against Berkley. The Falcons also have other weapons as well for coach Terrance Porter. If Atkins wants to make a name for himself, he can do so in this district.

PROJECTION: Groves and North Farmington will be an interesting game on a big court, pending if the Raiders get by the hosts Southfield Arts and Tech in the pre-district. I think Farmington beats Harrison and meets North Farmington in the final where the Raiders coaching wins them this district. PICK: NORTH FARMINGTON.

District 15 @ West Bloomfield

AVONDALE vs Waterford Kettering
WEST BLOOMFIELD vs BLOOMFIELD HILLS
AVONDALE/Waterford Kettering vs Waterford Mott
WEST BLOOMFIELD/BLOOMFIELD HILLS vs Orchard Lake St. Marys

INSIGHT: This will be an interesting district to keep an eye on because you have four of the six teams here that have a great shot at winning this district. Avondale is young and they feature Marton Cole but the Yellow Jackets beat Waterford Mott earlier in the season. Waterford Kettering has no chance in this district and neither does Bloomfield Hills. Orchard Lake St Marys and Waterford Mott have had great seasons and West Bloomfield has bounced back after having an early season rough start.

FAVORITE: West Bloomfield: The Lakers are loaded and they have home court which will be a bonus to be in front of the Swamp. West Bloomfield is led by their strong guard duo of Tre Harvey and Jalen Kelso but the Lakers have others that can contribute like James Faulkner. West Bloomfield coach Jeremy Dehna has done a great job getting the Lakers back to the spot where they want to be at.

TEAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Orchard Lake St. Marys, Avondale, Waterford Mott: The Eaglets are a loaded team led by Caiden Preiskorn and will look to continue that thus far. The Yellow Jackets are an interesting team despite finishing 11-9 on the year. Avondale is led by Marton Cole and Kobe Anthony for coach Tim Morton. The Corsairs are loaded with talent after winning the Lakes Valley Conference crown led by Ashton Franklin, Mike Hardie, Keimonnee Fields, Tariq Hardy, and David McCullum for former Berkley coach David McGlown

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Caiden Preiskorn-Orchard Lake St. Marys: The pressure will be on Preiskorn to deliver for the Eaglets in this district. The transfer from Orion has had a great season thus far and will likely be the main focal point in taking Orchard Lake St. Marys deep into the postseason.

PROJECTION: This is an interesting district to say the least in front of the Swamp. I think this will be a Waterford Mott/West Bloomfield district final. I think the inside game of the Corsairs could be too much for the host Lakers. PICK: WATERFORD MOTT.

District 16 @ Troy

SEAHOLM vs TROY ATHENS
TROY vs Birmingham Brother Rice
SEAHOLM/TROY ATHENS vs ROYAL OAK

INSIGHT: This is a district where there is a dangerous team lurking in Seaholm. The Maples are a veteran team led by Brady Flynn and Cooper Mixon. Troy is a veteran team fresh off a trip to the State Quarterfinals last season. Troy Athens is a veteran team but has fallen on some hard times a bit. Royal Oak is very young led by Carter Ellis. Birmingham Brother Rice is a middle of the pack team in the Catholic League.

FAVORITE: Troy: The Colts have a veteran team led by Jason Dietz, Leon Ayers, and Danny Sully. They also have home court and are well coached by legendary Gary Fralick. Troy also plays in the Red which is very tough by the way. This looks to be the Colts chance to rise up again.

TEAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Troy Athens, Seaholm: If there are two teams that could give Troy fits it could be Seaholm and their arch rivals. The Maples are a veteran team led by Brady Flynn and Cooper Mixon for coach Greg DeGeeter. Seaholm has not had the greatest of seasons this year, going 7-13 in the process. The Red Hawks have been much better winning 15 games this season but they have been slumping a little bit losing two of it's last three games. Troy Athens is led by Taylor McCaskill, Clark Joslin, Kyle Sweeney, Brent Stephens, and Jacob Bradley for coach Dave Scott.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Taylor McCaskill-Troy Athens: McCaskill is the Red Hawks veteran leader on a team that has plenty of experience. He has had some big games in the past leading his team to big wins especially in the White. McCaskill will be needed heavily if Troy Athens has a chance to win this district on their arch rival's home floor.

PROJECTION: I think it could be a rematch of last season's district final at Bloomfield Hills but Seaholm will have a much tougher road with a very good Troy Athens team and a dangerous Royal Oak team. Troy should get by Birmingham Brother Rice and win this district in front of the home folks. PICK: TROY.

District 14 @ Stoney Creek

STONEY CREEK vs Romeo
ROCHESTER vs Utica Eisenhower
STONEY CREEK/Romeo vs ADAMS

INSIGHT: This is an interesting district, you have the three Rochester schools along with Romeo and Utica Eisenhower. Stoney Creek and Adams were in the White this season but with different results. The Highlanders rebounded from an 0-21 season last year and went 12-8 on the season with a young team. The Cougars lost Mike Melenagri to a injury in December and not been the same since he went out. Rochester shared the Blue and has rebounded after having a tough season by going 16-4 on the season. Romeo has bounced back since their loss to Lake Orion before Christmas break winning the Macomb Area White title. Utica Eisenhower has had a rough season and might not have a chance in this district.

FAVORITE: Rochester: The Falcons have arguably the two best players in this district in seniors Hunter Schlater and LaMarko Gulledge even though Romeo with Blake McRae and Stoney Creek's Nate Davis may differ. Schlater and Gulledge have been Rochester's best players for first year coach Vance Kirkwood and they will need to be if they want to move on in the district.

TEAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Adams, Stoney Creek, Romeo: The Highlanders are very young led by Ethan Emerzan, Austin Ursuay, Peyton Preiskorn, and Jake Jenkins after turning around an 0-21 season for coach Brad Crighton to win 12 games. Stoney Creek whom won nine games this season has Nate Davis for coach Steve Norgrove along with home court even though they are without Mike Melnagri whom is out for the season. Romeo is led by Blake McRae for coach Marv Cushingberry. It wouldn't surprise anyone if these teams win this district.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Corey Gulledge-Rochester: All the hype will be around Hunter Schlater and LaMarko Gulledge but there will be games where the Falcons need a third scorer and that player could be LaMarko's brother Corey. Corey has the capabilities to take over games if he wants too. Gulledge is the third option in the Rochester offense. If Corey gets going and can take the pressure off his older brother LaMarko and Schlater then look out.

PROJECTION: This is an interesting district to see. I think Rochester got a nice draw with playing Utica Eisenhower. Adams, Stoney Creek, and Romeo will have to go through each other to get to the final. I think this will be a Falcons/Highlanders rematch with the young Adams squad pulling off the upset. PICK: ADAMS.

District 13 @ Clarkston

Holly vs Brandon
ORION vs CLARKSTON
Holly/Brandon vs OXFORD

INSIGHT: This is a district that features the two best teams in this district facing each other in the semifinals. Clarkston has home court and are the defending Class A State Champs. Lake Orion has had a successful season turning around a 4-16 record from a year ago by winning 17 games, giving them a share of the Blue. Oxford has taken a step back after moving up to the White. Holly is solid led by Noah Bayliss. Brandon will struggle in this district.

FAVORITE: Clarkston: The Wolves are loaded with 11 seniors including the likes of CJ Robinson, Nick Wells, Chase Wasilk and two Big Ten recruits in Foster Loyer and Taylor Currie. Clarkston also has home court and is the defending State Champions in Class A. The Wolves did suffer a setback a bit as they might not have Loyer for this district because of a partially torn meniscus he injured against West Bloomfield but he will be reevaluated on Monday to see if he can play or not. Even without Loyer, they have a deep bench led by Matt Nicholson, Hank Schimell, Tieler Houston, and Trysten Mysen for coach Dan Fife.

TEAM TO WATCH OUT FOR: Lake Orion: The Dragons have had a bounce back season, turning a 4-16 record to go 17-3 and a share the Blue crown. Lake Orion is led by Jamie Lewis, Drew Crane, Pierce Burke, Casey Stironek and have emerging players like Nate Talbot, Jack Cummings, Kyle Loken, and Jake Rydquist waiting in the wings for coach Jim Manzo. The Dragons could be in a nice spot for years to come.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Michael Raisch-Oxford: The Wildcats have had a rough season in the always tough White finishing at 7-13 but coach Steve Laidlaw has a junior heavy team led by seniors Jimmy Claudio and Nolan Harding. Nolan Hiler, Evan Bruning, D'Wavay Turner, Connor Nicholson, and Trey Townsend will also look to contribute as well. Raisch can hit threes and rebound. He will need to play like a star for Oxford if they want to make a run in this district.

PROJECTION: I think this will be a Clarkston/Oxford district final but the final technically will be in the semifinal game. Anyway the Wolves will move on here. PICK: CLARKSTON.

Troy Athens has their new Football Coach.

Written Tuesday February 27th at 10:00 AM

The Troy Athens Red Hawks have found their new football coach and it ended up being in it's own building.

The Red Hawks named Billy Keenest on Monday replacing Josh Heppner after he spent eight seasons at Troy Athens.

Heppner will be an assistant this upcoming season at Adams.

Keenest coached at Berkley last season posting a 1-8 record but there is some advantages he has coming back to the place where he was the offensive coordinator from 2010-2016. Keenest also teaches at Troy Athens which is another advantage.

Keenest knows the White very well coaching at Berkley last season. It will be the division where the Red Hawks will be in this season.

Keenest whom played quarterback at Oxford under coach Bud Rowley as a player will have to fix some issues that has plagued Troy Athens. Participation has hurt the football program despite having a huge enrollment (2,026 students.) The Red Hawks did not field a Junior Varsity team so he'll have to address that. On the Varsity level, he takes over a team that has gone 12-42 since 2011 and last season had a very rough year going 0-9 in the always brutal Red. The defense was abysmal allowing 351 points and the offense only scored 112 points last season.

Keenest will have lineman David Demon coming back but they have some questions at the skill positions after losing a ton of experience last season.

Keenest's former school Berkley will now have their third coach in three years. The Bears will go down to the Blue this season. Berkley could keep the job in house or have to search outside the box for their new coach.

Troy Athens opens up the season with Seaholm in week one. They still have games against Lake Orion, Groves, Oak Park, Harrison, Stoney Creek, and Rochester on the horizon.

The Red Hawks have to address their rivalry with Troy. The Colts are 8-5 since 2005 against Troy Athens including last season in which Troy beat the Red Hawks 20-19 to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2009. The game this season will be at Troy.

Troy Athens hasn't made the playoffs since 2011 where they lost in triple overtime to Romeo 34-31.

It will be Keenest's job to get them back to the postseason.

Thoughts.

This move didn't surprise me, I had a feeling it would be Keenest getting the job over at Troy Athens. He teaches at Troy Athens and was the team's offensive coordinator under Heppner. Keenest knows the Red Hawks troubles in and out. The White is very manageable for Troy Athens but they are going to have to address some things if they want to restore the glory from a few years ago.

I feel bad for Berkley though. The Bears are going to have their third coach in three years. I think a perfect coach for them will be John Erstine from Harrison would be a perfect fit for them.

Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.

Girls Basketball District Preview.

Written Saturday February 24th at 11:30 AM

Here the district previews and projections for Girls Basketball. Districts start on Monday, Semifinals start on Wednesday, and the finals are on Friday.

District 22 @ Detroit Renaissance

HAZEL PARK vs Warren Fitzgerald
HAZEL PARK/Warren Fitzgerald vs Detroit Renaissance
BERKLEY vs OAK PARK

INSIGHT: This is not a strong district when you look at the teams. Detroit Renaissance is the host school and does have the best team here in this district. The Phoenix have played in a much tougher league than the rest of the schools. Berkley, Warren Fitzgerald, Hazel Park, and Oak Park haven’t had the greatest of seasons in their leagues.

FAVORITE: Detroit Renaissance: The Phoenix are a young but talented basketball team led by MiKyah Findley, Audrianna Hill, Nika Dorsey, and Shannon Wheeler. They also have home court and play in a tough league in the Detroit Public School League.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE FAVORITE: I don’t see anyone challenging the favorite coming out of this district.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Trinity Benton- Hazel Park: Benton it’s her senior season, it’s time to deliver for the Vikings, a team that has been up and down. She could be a difference maker but Benton hasn’t had a strong season thus far.

PREDICTION: I think Detroit Renaissance comes out of this district pretty easily. PICK: DETROIT RENAISSANCE.

CONFIDENCE METER: 96 percent.

District 21 @ Farmington Hills Mercy

GROVES vs Farmington Hills Mercy
GROVES/Farmington Hills Mercy vs NORTH FARMINGTON
FARMINGTON vs SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH

INSIGHT: This is a tough district to pick from because all of these teams have winning records with a combined 73-18 record but each of these teams have some flaws in their games. Farmington whom shared the Blue title this season has had a revival led by first year coach Laura Guzman and players like Olivia Perkins, Nevada Hargress, Abbey Smentowski, and MaKayla Martin. North Farmington features the best big in this district in Samantha Cherney but they need a guard like Molly Simpson and Maya Kelly to step up. Southfield Arts and Tech features two very talented players in Alexis Johnson and Cheyenne McEvans but they need that third scorer. Groves whom shared the White crown has the best all around athlete in Sha Carter to go along with Kayla Nelson but they need production from their inside game. Farmington Hills Mercy is the host, deep, and talented led by Jenna Schluter, Bella Dugas, Lexi Thomas, Julia Bishop, Isabelle Miner, among others.

FAVORITE: Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors whom went 1-5 early but have bounced back in a big way living up to expectations for coach Michelle Marshall to which they shared the Red crown. Southfield Arts and Tech features two very good players in Cheyenne McEvans and Alexis Johnson. They are going to need a third scorer like a D'Layna Hollman or a Shawna Manning if they are going to win this district that features a loaded field.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE FAVORITE: This district has plenty of teams that can win this district. Groves has a ton of talent led by Carter, Lauren Palmer, and Nelson. Farmington Hills Mercy though not their true dominant self but the Marlins have some talent back to go along with home court. Farmington if they can upset Southfield Arts and Tech. North Farmington is a streaky team solid defensibly led by Cherney.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Sha Carter- Groves: Carter is a senior, there was rumblings that she would leave Groves and go to North Carolina, that wasn’t the case and she is having a strong season for the Falcons. This is a perfect opportunity to showcase what Carter can do for Groves in this postseason against some very good competition.

PREDICTION: This district could go either way, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if there were an upset. I think Groves is playing really well right now but Southfield Arts and Tech is red hot. Farmington is also red hot as well. North Farmington is very consistent and have played a tough league schedule. Farmington Hills Mercy though has experience back and plays in the Catholic League. The small court at Farmington Hills Mercy will play a factor but at end of the day I like Southfield Arts and Tech to move on because of the schedule they have played. PICK: SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH.

CONFIDENCE METER: 52 percent.

District 50 @ Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Algonac vs Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood
Algonac/Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood vs Macomb Lutheran North
PONTIAC vs Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

INSIGHT: This is not a strong district when you look at the teams that are here. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep has played a tough schedule and features two very good players in sisters Sterling and Celia Gaynor. Pontiac though has been down most of the season in the Blue features Brala Benton but not a lot of depth for coach Christopher Wright. Algonac has a ton of experience back but have had a rough season in the Blue Water Conference. Macomb Lutheran North has had a rough season but is starting to play better. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood has had a tough season as well.

FAVORITE: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: The Irish have the Gaynor sisters in Celia and Sterling and have played a brutal non conference schedule against the likes of Orion, Clarkston, and Bloomfield Hills. Also, home court favors Pontiac Notre Dame Prep as well. Everything looks good for the Irish to win this district.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE THE FAVORITE: Maybe Macomb Lutheran North could challenge but they have had a rough season. Algonac has been disappointing this season despite having a ton of experience.  I’m not sold on Pontiac because the Phoenix lost to the Irish 54-29 on February 7th. Other than that, no one threatens the Irish here.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Celia Gaynor- Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: Gaynor has missed some time early but she is back now and the Irish are rolling. It’s important for Gaynor to keep playing with

PREDICITION: This district is the Irish’s district to lose, don’t see anyone threating them here. PICK: PONTIAC NOTRE DAME PREP.

CONFIDENCE METER: 85 percent.

District 49 @ Birmingham Detroit Country Day

Birmingham Detroit Country Day vs Center Line
Birmingham Detroit Country Day/Center Line vs Ferndale University
Clawson vs Madison Heights Lamphere
Clawson/Madison Heights Lamphere vs FERNDALE

INSIGHT: I feel bad for Clawson, they have an experienced team back and a winning record but they are placed in a rough district with Birmingham Detroit Country Day. The Yellow Jackets are the defending Class B champs and are very talented again for coach Frank Orlando led by Kalea Webb. Orlando has really been spoiled when looking at the talent that had transferred in along with the development of star players that have went on to Division One Colleges. Ferndale is very young despite winning five games this season. Center Line, Ferndale University and Madison Heights Lamphere are young teams as well.

FAVORITE: Birmingham Detroit Country Day: The Yellow Jackets are the defending Class B State Champs. They have the talent to possibly repeat as champions and that’s not counting on the fact they are the hosts of this district.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE THE FAVORITE: Could Clawson give the Yellow Jackets problems??? its possible if Birmingham Detroit Country Day plays to the level of their competition other than that no one else will threaten in this district.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Maddie Novak- Birmingham Detroit Country Day: Novak transferred from Orion but hasn’t had the type of season she usually has but Novak hasn’t needed to be a star player like she was at Orion. Although Novak starts, she hasn’t been herself lately and the stats prove it.

PREDICTION: It will be Clawson vs Birmingham Detroit Country Day in the district final. I think this will be close for a half but hosts will be moving on because they have too much talent for the Trojans to overcome. PICK: BIRMINGHAM DETROIT COUNTRY DAY.

CONFIDENCE METER: 100 percent.

District 14 @ Stoney Creek

STONEY CREEK vs ROCHESTER
STONEY CREEK/ROCHESTER vs Romeo
ADAMS vs Utica Eisenhower

INSIGHT: This is an interesting district when you look at it much deeper. The Rochester schools have not had the strongest of seasons but they are going to be the most dangerous especially Stoney Creek and Adams. The Cougars are well coached by Kellen James while the Highlanders feature a young team ready to break out. Rochester is an experienced team led by Tori Hawkins and Jenna Norgrove. Romeo has had a tough season with injuries to key players and enter into this district after being with powers Macomb Dakota and Port Huron Northern. Utica Eisenhower has experience and have been really the only team that has been healthy and it has shown in their win/loss records.

FAVORITE: Utica Eisenhower: The Eagles have been a different team since their early season loss to Lake Orion. Utica Eisenhower features Lauren DeBeau, Marlyn Kosnik, and Paige Montreuli. Those three could give anyone problems. The early favorite has to be the Eagles even though they haven’t won a district crown in a while.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE THE FAVORITE: Hmm this one is interesting, Romeo could challenge Utica Eisenhower but injuries and lack of scoring have hurt the Bulldogs despite having the McDoungah sisters and Amber Flinn for coach Connie Hernden. Stoney Creek has had issues scoring as of late but they have played a tough schedule led by Emily Eckhout and have home court is a huge factor here. Adams if they can get things figured out has MaKayla Smith, Noelle Dunbar, and a young group that when hot could be dangerous. Rochester has experience led by Tori Hawkins, Paola Barraza, and Jenna Norgrove. Three of these teams could give Utica Eisenhower trouble.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Meghan Solek- Stoney Creek: Solek debuts in her first district but she will need to contribute if the Cougars have a chance to win this district. Expect opposing teams to guard Emily Eckhout tight. Solek will need to get steals and score for coach Kellen James team to move on at home in this district.

PREDICTION: No one thought that Adams would win the district last season but they did. Romeo is back in this district after being with powerhouses Macomb Dakota and Port Huron Northern. Stoney Creek is the darkhorse here because of home court but Adams if they figure things out could upset the Eagles again because of whom they have. I think could be the year Utica Eisenhower gets by that hump. PICK: UTICA EISENHOWER.

CONFIDENCE METER: 56 percent.

District 15 @ Bloomfield Hills

AVONDALE vs WEST BLOOMFIELD
AVONDALE/WEST BLOOMFIELD vs BLOOMFIELD HILLS
Waterford Kettering vs Waterford Mott

INSIGHT: People look at this matchup and say it will be Bloomfield Hills and Waterford Kettering well it could be possible but there are still some solid teams in this district. If Bloomfield Hills three point shooting fails them led by Mariam Hashim, Grace Getz, Becca Hancock, Immani Wright, and Jordan Banks then they are in trouble. Waterford Kettering hasn’t been their normal selves this season despite having size and a ton of talent led by their forwards in Marissa Brady, Clare Broughan to go along with Ashley Watts and Ashley Watson. Avondale is a darkhorse because they are healthy led by Olivia Russell and Keori Lee. They have had a strong season thus far in the Blue. West Bloomfield has had a rough season but ask Adams what they did, had a rough season but won a district last season. Waterford Mott is very young but they have a big win over Waterford Kettering earlier in the season and feature Emily Huff along with a very odd mascot name Lonzo.

FAVORITE: Bloomfield Hills: Earlier I would say it would be Waterford Kettering would have been the favorite but the Captains haven't had the strongest of seasons in it's first year in the newly created Lakes Valley League. The early favorite has to be the Blackhawks because of home court and if they are hitting on all cylinders they can be very dangerous but they do have a fatal flaw though if they are not hitting the three point shot then it could be trouble for coach Jeff Rubin's team.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE THE FAVORITE: There are four teams that can challenge Bloomfield Hills here in this district, obviously the team I’m thinking about that could be the most serious to the Blackhawks is Waterford Kettering. The Captains even though have been disappointing still have a great shot to win this district and are well coached in Scott Woodhull. Waterford Kettering has the size led by Broughan and Brady and two solid guards in Watts and Watson. Waterford Mott will also be a serious contender as well led by Huff and Abby Upleger. The other team that could make a run is Avondale. The Yellow Jackets shared the Blue title this season and when healthy are a very dangerous team led by Russell and Lee for coach Phil Dawson. Avondale could give Bloomfield Hills fits pending if they get by West Bloomfield whom is deep and athletic led by Destiny Monroe.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Grace Getz-Bloomfield Hills: Getz has had a nice sophomore season with her three point shooting but in a district with Avondale and Waterford Kettering expect teams to play close to attention to when they play the Blackhawks. Expect opponents to guard Hashim and Banks tight. Getz will need to make herself a threat from three in this district, if she does then Bloomfield Hills has a good shot at getting through in this district.

PREDICTION: Experience matters here in this district with apologies to coach Jeff Rubin, it will be the Captains that move on over the hosts. PICK: WATERFORD KETTERING.

CONFIDENCE METER: 60 percent.

District 13 @ Clarkston

ORION vs Holly
ORION/Holly vs OXFORD
CLARKSTON vs Brandon

INSIGHT: This district might have turned into somewhat of a pick em district. I think four teams have a shot at winning this district. Clarkston has a ton of talent and experience but their motivation should be that they haven’t won a district title in a while and Waterford Kettering, a team that has beaten the Wolves twice is not in the district. Orion has had an injury riddled season under first year coach Mike Griffin feature Sophie Wyborski, Kendall Robertson, Paytin Shadaia, Sydney Strenger, and Shannon Falter. The Dragons do match up well with the Wolves. Holly has been red hot led by Rebecca Fugate, whom has averaged 20 points per game. Oxford features the Methner sisters (Lauren and MaKenzie) and Ashley Herschman, post play could be an issue for coach Rachel Bryer’s team. Brandon won’t contend in this district.

FAVORITE: Clarkston: The Wolves whom shared the Red and have been on a tear lately blowing out opponents left and right. Clarkston has a ton of experience led by Kayla Luchenbach, Maddie Beck, Molly Nicholson, Kianna Aynotte, and Taylor Heaten. The Wolves have home court which will be a bonus. This might be coach Christine Rogers best chance of winning a district title.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE: I can see four teams that could give the Wolves some trouble. Orion could be the most likely of the teams that could give Clarkston because of what happened at Clarkston earlier in the season. The Dragons lost 55-54 in overtime in that one and have the talent that can give the Wolves problems even with an injury riddled team like they have been during most of the season. However the Wolves returned the favor at Orion by humiliating the Dragons 51-19 two weeks ago. Orion will have to get by two teams that have beaten them this season if they want to get another shot at Clarkston in Holly and Oxford. The Bronchos beat the Dragons 39-29 in December feature three very good players in Fugate, whom is a three point shooter, Payton Price, and Emma Tooley. Oxford whom beat Orion 37-35 in overtime has had a strong season in the White is led by both Methner's, and Herschman. This will be an interesting district to keep an eye on.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Paytin Shadaia-Orion: The Dragons only true point guard will be the key to where the team goes in the district tournament, when she plays well Orion plays well but when she doesn’t then the team struggles. Shadaia will be the key to see where the Dragons go in the postseason because of her ability to move the ball around.

PREDICTION: Clarkston should get by Brandon and whomever wins on the other side of the draw between Orion, Holly, and Oxford.Whomever wins the other side of the district would have earned their way to the district final. I don’t know what to think especially in the district final but I don’t think Clarkston will lose twice now here in this district with a senior heavy team now, could they??? PICK: CLARKSTON.

CONFIDENCE METER: 51 percent.

District 16 @ Birmingham Marian

TROY ATHENS vs Birmingham Marian
TROY ATHENS/Birmingham Marian vs TROY
SEAHOLM vs ROYAL OAK

INSIGHT: This is an interesting district because you have two teams that are superior to the rest of the field. Birmingham Marian whom is the Catholic League Champions fatures Olivia Moore. Moore has had a good junior season and could very well be a difference maker once the district starts. Royal Oak is the next challenger led by Samantha Potter, June Donnellon, and Jessica Adams. The Ravens shared the White title this season. Troy has Athena Sampson among others. Troy Athens has the Crumm sisters (Isabelle and Maddie). Seaholm has a young team that has taken a ton of lumps this season.

FAVORITE: Birmingham Marian: Being at home in a small gym has it’s advantages in which the Mustangs will have. Birmingham Marian has had a strong season and could very well be Catholic League Champs yet again once the postseason starts. The Mustangs are not a one girl team like most teams think they are, they have others as well in Madeline Laurencelle, Lauren Montalbano, Uche Ike, and Samantha Patterson for coach Mary Cicerone. Everything looks right for Birmingham Marian to win this district.

TEAMS THAT COULD CHALLENGE: Royal Oak by far will challenge in this district because of the talent they have back and whom they played. They have also been to tougher environments as well. Also, the Ravens beat Birmingham Marian 31-30 on February 2nd at Royal Oak. The Ravens are well coached by Brian Sopota and has Claire Kostiecki, Donnellon, Adams, and Potter that can match the Mustangs. I’m not sure if Troy, Troy Athens, or Seaholm stand a chance against the top two teams in the district despite those three teams having talent as well.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Claire Kostiecki- Royal Oak: If the Ravens want to win their first district title as a school, they'll need not only Potter and Adams to do their magic but they need a strong game from Claire Kostiecki, their big in the post. It will be key especially against a team like Birmingham Marian to show that she can be that third scorer if they have a chance to pull it out.

PREDICITION: It will be Birmingham Marian vs Royal Oak in the district final to put it out there. Defense will be the key in this matchup, if its an offensive matchup advantage Mustangs but if it’s a defensive matchup like it was at Royal Oak then advantage Ravens. This will be a close game like it was at Royal Oak. Birmingham Marian will make the adjustments needed but so will Royal Oak. Now people say home court is the difference, well it won’t be in this case, give me the Ravens. PICK: ROYAL OAK.

CONFIDENCE METER: 65 percent.

Paukovitis Out at Orion.

Written Thursday February 15th at 11:05 AM

There will be a new Boys Soccer coach in Lake Orion this fall.

According to press release released by Dragons Athletic Director and former football coach Chris Bell, Lake Orion Boys Soccer coach Mike Paukovitis has stepped down from coaching.

Paukovitis has coached the Dragons beginning the season in 2008 and the program has seen a ton of success under his watch.

Bell mentioned in the release that he thanked Paukovitis efforts on coaching the team and looks for the future. “Coach Paukovitis is in a place of his life where the time and demands in his professional career as well as his commitment to his family do not allow him to dedicate the time and effort needed to successfully our high school soccer program. I understand and respect his decision. Matt began coaching at Lake Orion in 2008 and the program has seen periods of great success. Several of his players have gone on to play at the college level and he has established Lake Orion as a solid player in the high school soccer world. I am thankful for his efforts. That being said, we look forward to the next chapter in Lake Orion Boys Soccer and we are going to hire a coach that will take us back to the championship level. Oakland County has a rich history of elite soccer programs and Lake Orion can be on that level.”

It will be interesting whom Bell hires as the team’s next soccer coach but he has an idea where to take the program.

We shall see what happens.

Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.

Wrestling Team Regional Preview

Written: February 11th 2018 1:42 PM

Regional 110.2 @ Goodrich

AVONDALE vs Marysville
Goodrich vs Holly

Thoughts and Insight: Goodrich is the host in this regional and were dominant in their district with wins over Imlay City (60-16) and Croswell-Lexington (42-23.) Avondale shocked some folks coming into this regional with wins over Pontiac (54-15) and a shocker over Orchard Lake St. Marys (45-30.) Holly won their district pretty handily as they beat Brandon (42-24) and Linden (55-11.) Marysville had to beat Armada 45-30 to come into this regional.

PICK: I like Marysville to come out of this regional. They have the reputation and could very well get to Kalamazoo.

Regional 107.1 @ Hartland

SEAHOLM vs Hartland
Walled Lake Central vs Warren Mott

Thoughts and Insight: Seaholm came out of nowhere to win their district as they upset favored and host Southfield Arts and Tech 36-30 along with Groves 56-21. Hartland is a State power and they were dominant against Lakeland (78-6) and Milford (78-0) showing why they are a power.  Warren Mott easily won their district by beating Warren Cousino 58-22 and Royal Oak 77-6. Walled Lake Central used their emotion, after a sudden passing of a teammate by winning their district over North Farmington (78-6) and West Bloomfield (58-22.)

PICK: Is there any doubt that Hartland will move on here. They host the regional and the Eagles will be dominant.

Regional 102.1 @ Clarkston

CLARKSTON vs OXFORD
ORION vs TROY

Thoughts and Insight: This regional feature the three top place teams at the Oakland County Meet and at the League Meet. These four teams are familiar with each other as these four teams met at the OAA League Meet at Adams. Three of these teams compete in the Red while the other competes in the White. Clarkston defeated Waterford 60-3 to earn the honor of hosting the district. Oxford, the defending regional champions from a year ago went into Romeo and overwhelmed Romeo (49-19) and Port Huron Northern (62-9.) Orion hosted and won their district defeating Red foes Adams (36-29) and Rochester (55-21). Troy also hosted and won their district defeating MAC foes Utica 54-18 and Utica Eisenhower (39-31).

PICK: Oxford is the favorite in this regional. The Wildcats have experience and has been here before. Clarkston the host will not make it easy for them. Orion should defeat Troy but Oxford’s experience and depth will be too much.

Wrestling Team District Preview.

Written Monday February 5th at 6:00 PM

These are the team Wrestling District preview for the 22 OAA teams competing in Division One and Two. Most districts are set for either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Anyway here is my thoughts and insights on each district.

District 105. 1 @ Waterford Kettering

CLARKSTON vs Waterford

Thoughts and Pick: This is a mismatch on paper, both Waterford Kettering and Waterford Mott merged this season and they will take on Clarkston. As mentioned, this is a mismatch, going with the Wolves here. PICK: CLARKSTON.

District 106.1 @ Romeo

OXFORD vs Romeo
Port Huron vs Port Huron Northern.

Thoughts and Pick: This is a mismatch on paper, Oxford is deep and talented on paper. Romeo could give them a scare and so will Port Huron Northern but not likely and they should have no problem rolling in this district. PICK: OXFORD.

District 107.1 @ Orion

ORION vs ADAMS
ROCHESTER vs STONEY CREEK

Thoughts and Pick: Really concerned about Orion’s injuries and they have played Adams and lost close. The Dragons can not ill afford to have voids here. I can this being an all Rochester final with the Highlanders coming out on top. PICK: ADAMS.

District 108.1 @ Troy

TROY vs Utica Eisenhower
TROY ATHENS vs Utica

Thoughts and Pick: This is a pick em district when you look at the teams. Utica Eisenhower has had a rough season. Utica has had a rough season as well. Troy is in the White and Troy Athens is in the Blue. When in doubt always go with the home team. PICK: TROY.

District 126. 1 @ Southfield Arts and Tech

SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH vs Birmingham Brother Rice
GROVES vs SEAHOLM

Thoughts and Pick: Southfield Arts and Tech could be the team to beat. Seaholm will challenge in this district but they have to get by Groves. The Warriors should move on and strong in this district. PICK: SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH.

District 127.1 @ Walled Lake Central

BLOOMFIELD HILLS vs WEST BLOOMFIELD
NORTH FARMINGTON vs Walled Lake Central

Thoughts and Pick: Looking at this district, it could be a tall order for the three OAA teams that are in this district with Walled Lake Central. Walled Lake Central is at home and home court may matter here. PICK: WALLED LAKE CENTRAL.

District 128.1 @ Warren Cousino

BERKLEY vs Warren Cousino
ROYAL OAK vs Warren Mott

Thoughts and Pick: This is an interesting district when you look at the teams. Berkley and Royal Oak are teams in the Blue but when you look at it you got to give it to Warren Mott. Warren Mott has had a strong season and should continue their road in the district. PICK: WARREN MOTT.

District 139.2 @ Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

AVONDALE vs PONTIAC
Orchard Lake St. Marys vs Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Thoughts and Pick: This is an interesting district, Avondale and Pontiac has had tough seasons thus far. It could be interesting when those two take on one another. I think Orchard Lake St. Marys with the struggle they have went through could pull it off here. PICK: ORCHARD LAKE ST. MARYS.

District 162.2 @ Farmington

HARRISON vs FARMINGTON
Detroit Redford Union vs Detroit Redford Thurston

Thoughts and Pick: This is not a good district but anything is possible. When in doubt go with the home team. PICK: FARMINGTON.

District 163.2 @ Madison Heights Lamphere

FERNDALE vs Madison Heights Lamphere
HAZEL PARK vs Warren Fitzgerald

It could be an interesting matchup in Macomb County and it looks like it could be an all Macomb County final between Madison Heights Lamphere and Warren Fitzgerald. I like the Spartans to come out of this district. PICK: WARREN FITZGERALD.

Basketball Updated Top 23.

Written Saturday February 10th at 7:45 PM
Updated Monday February 19th at 11:00 PM

Hello everyone, here is the basketball top 23. This will be updated weekly. As mentioned we take strength of schedule account along with the team's quality of work and wins in the non conference. Anyway here are the top 23 for both Boys and Girls Basketball.

Boys

1. Clarkston (14-1): Three games in four days will be interesting for the Wolves.

2. Oak Park (13-3): Knights have won 12 straight since a 1-3 start.

3. Hazel Park (15-1): Vikings winning ugly games lately.

4. Troy (12-4): Tough loss to Clarkston shouldn't derail Colts hopes.

5. West Bloomfield (11-6): Lakers have won six straight since struggling early.

6. Troy Athens (15-3): Red Hawks have rebounded since allowing 76 at home to Oak Park.

7. Orion (13-3): Dragons sent a statement to Rochester but still need help in the Blue race.

8. Rochester (13-3): Big test could determine Blue title on Wednesday for the Falcons.

9. Adams (10-6): Highlanders are depleted but being very competitive.

10. Farmington (10-6): Falcons have not lost at home all season, that will be put to the test on Wednesday.

11. Avondale (9-8): Yellow Jackets looking to improve going into districts.

12. Stoney Creek (8-9): Cougars getting better right now which is a good sign heading to district but will a certain player return for Stoney Creek???

13. Seaholm (7-10): Maples fell back to back to Troy Athens but they see them again in districts. It's tough to beat a team three times.

14. Groves (7-9): Tough stretch looms for the Falcons before districts.

15. North Farmington (6-10): Raiders getting better, could be the favorite heading into districts.

16. Pontiac (3-13): Big win over Farmington could boost Phoenix confidence.

17. Bloomfield Hills (4-12): Blackhawks have been showing some fight lately.

18. Royal Oak (7-9): Ravens have won two straight games by a combined four points.

19. Ferndale (6-11): Eagles trailed by 23 at one point against Berkley only to comeback and stun the Bears on their home court.

20. Oxford (5-11): Maybe the Wildcats are regretting being in the White.

21. Harrison (5-11): Hawks are 2-2 in February, could it be a positive sign going forward???

22. Berkley (10-7): Bears have lost six straight since the Lake Orion game.

23. Southfield Arts and Tech (2-14): Warriors have a tough stretch coming up.

Girls

1. Groves (16-2): Falcons have won 13 straight and haven’t lost in 2018 yet.

2. Royal Oak (16-2): Ravens have won 14 of 15. Will be a factor once districts start.

3. Southfield Arts and Tech (12-5): Warriors have won 11 straight since a 1-5 start.

4. Clarkston (14-4): Two blowouts have the Wolves heading in the right direction.

5. Bloomfield Hills (11-5): Three games in three days is going to test the Blackhawks will.

6. North Farmington (11-5): Raiders getting ready for that tough district at Farmington Hills Mercy that looms.

7. Avondale (15-2): Yellow Jackets rolling heading into districts, could be a tough out.

8. Farmington (14-5): Laura Guzman should be Coach of the Year in the OAA. Falcons playing with nothing to lose heading into districts.

9. Oxford (14-4): Wildcats showed some fight against Royal Oak but they can do the same against Groves???

10. Stoney Creek (5-13): Cougars are the Rochester City Champs.

11. Orion (4-14): Dragons have some issues they need to address.

12. Adams (4-14): Highlanders really have some issues they need to address.

13. West Bloomfield (6-12): Lakers starting to turn things around a little bit.

14. Troy Athens (6-11): Red Hawks are a hot and cold team, look good on some nights and others they don’t.

15. Troy (7-11): Colts winning games that they are suppose to win.

16. Berkley (5-12): Not a good week for the Bears, they need to bounce back and quick.

17. Oak Park (7-8): It could be a long road for the Knights once the postseason starts.

18. Seaholm (3-15): Maples are a hot and cold team, just too inconsistent right now.

19. Rochester (2-16): Falcons have lost nine straight. Not a good sign heading into the postseason.

20. Pontiac (4-11): Phoenix have lost six straight games, not good.

21. Ferndale (5-9): Eagles just keep getting better.

22. Hazel Park (7-10): Vikings haven't been consistent, which is a major concern heading into the postseason.

Kithier drops lawsuit.

Written Thursday February 1st at 9:40 PM

The lawsuit is over.

Thomas Kithier and his family has voluntary dismissed his lawsuit against the MHSAA and Macomb Dakota officials on Thursday.

The family sought a restraining order giving Kithier a chance to play at Clarkston but was denied on two fronts, one by the MHSAA and the other in Federal Court.

Kithier transferred to Clarkston from Macomb Dakota last summer however Macomb Dakota filed a complaint with the MHSAA saying that the transfer was athletically motivated and wasn’t academically motivated like the Kithier family and Clarkston mentioned. The MHSAA agreed with Macomb Dakota’s request and denied Kithier eligibility to play because of its “links rule” in which they found that there was enough evidence linking Kithier with teammate Foster Loyer on an AAU team.

Kithier is a Michigan State recruit.

Kithier thanked his family, the basketball world, and his attorneys for fighting beside him to try to get him a chance to play for the Wolves this season but it wasn’t meant to be.

Kithier has been allowed to practice with the Wolves during this whole process.

The MHSAA transfer rule has been in place since 1997 but the links rule has been in place a few years ago.

It will be interesting to see if this case has an impact on future transfers down the line.

We'll see what happens.
