8. Oxford at Romeo: Wildcats head to Dan Barnabo Field to do battle with Paul Hurley and his Bulldogs. Oxford won 28-20 at home last season over Romeo.

9. Sterling Heights Stevenson at Troy: Colts want to return the favor after losing 7-3 at Runkel Field last season to the Titans.

10. Troy Athens at Orion: This is a huge statement game for the Red Hawks. Last season it was West Bloomfield that went into Orion and won. Could it be Troy Athens’s time??? A win here would be huge since they are 1-22 all-time against the Dragons.

DREAM SCHEDULE: West Bloomfield. What made last season magical for the Lakers was not only making the playoffs for the first time since 2008 but the fact they won at Orion, at Oxford, and at Stoney Creek. Now as a reward for coach Ronald Belmany’s team is they get Orion, Clarkston, Oxford, Stoney Creek, and the crossover all coming to the Swamp. To make things even better, you got a potential State title contending team here with the athletes that West Bloomfield has this season.

NIGHTMARE SCHEDULE: Oxford. When Oxford Athletic Director Mike Watson made the schedule in 2014, he gave his Wildcats five home games which included big money games against Romeo, Clarkston, Orion, Stoney Creek, and West Bloomfield. Oxford finished 6-3 and made the playoffs, now comes the tricky part. The teams mentioned up top will be where the Wildcats have to go on the road in the 2015 season and that’s not mentioning the crossover game at home. There could be a real possibility that Oxford might not make the playoffs this season because of the schedule.

TEAM THAT HAS A LOT TO PROVE: Orion. The Dragons missed the playoffs for the first time since 2000, were humiliated by West Bloomfield on their homecoming 39-0, lost to Clarkston, Oxford, and Adams, and had to survive games where they were 10-15 points better than, last season but this team was three snaps away from a 7-2 season as well. Orion has a lot of holes to fill and also a lot of doubters are counting them out. If they have another 4-5 or 5-4 season, then it could be time to question what Coach Chris Bell is doing.

TEAM THAT IS IN TROUBLE: Troy Athens. The Red Hawks are 6-21 since their double overtime playoff loss to Romeo in 2011. The program according to Coach Josh Heppener has said to be in better shape based on the numbers in the program and bonds they have grown. The defense has been a huge problem for Heppener’s team despite the fact they return seven starters (14 total.) Troy Athens allowed 327 points compared to 2012 in which they allowed 302 points and in 2011 allowed 285 points. The schedule is brutal with road games at Macomb L’Anse Creuse North, Orion, Clarkston, Oxford and Stoney Creek. They have West Bloomfield and Troy at home as well. It could be a long season on John R Road.

Last Season Finished: 8-3: 7-2. 6-1 Red: Lost to Walled Lake Central 11-7 in District Finals.

Scored 394 points (302 Red, most in league): Allowed 154 points (111 Red, fewest in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: 2

Colors: Forest Green and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Three vs Clarkston.

Projected Record 8-1, 7-0 Red. *

WB Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Athleticism and Speed.

WEAKNESS: Offensive and Defensive Lines.

The Lakers had a return to prominence last season with their first playoff appearance since 2008 and its first seven win season in 24 years. West Bloomfield returns a lot of talent (30 players) and will have five Division One recruits this season. “We’re pretty excited, we had a pretty good year last year for us. We have a lot of our kids coming back and they have been working pretty hard and they understand the responsibility of what it takes to repeat success and they want to have higher goals and the people before them. So they’re working to try and make that happen.” said Lakers Varsity Girls Basketball and assistant football Zach Hilbers.

West Bloomfield will led by quarterback/wide receiver Tristian Jackson (Michigan State.) Jackson was dominant at quarterback as he led the team to shocking road wins at Orion, Oxford, and Stoney Creek. He had a big game against Livonia Stevenson in the playoffs last season. Jackson whom is on the Mr. Football Watch for 2015 will spend some time at wide receiver this season as that will be his position once he gets to East Lansing next season but it is expected that he will mostly play quarterback and is a duel threat with his feet and his arm. Jackson’s favorite target also returns in Navon Mosley (Purdue.) Mosley was stellar at both receiver and at defensive back last season. Evan Foster (Bowling Green) is another wide receiver to be counted on for Jackson as he is back. Justin Clark is a cornerback and running back (Toledo) is another target that Jackson will have to run or throw too this season as well. “There is certainly some talent but talent is only a part of the game. You know there is talented kids on every single team and if other people are going to outwork us then we’re not going to be too successful. Talent is a wonderful place to start, we’re really blessed this year. We got a lot of great players. We need to make sure they stay hungry and they keep working so we know where we want to be” Hilbers said.

The lines will be a concern this season as Eddy Wilson is no longer there as he is at Purdue but they return Theo Majette but Hilbers is high on his line especially his offensive line. “We do have four starters returning. A couple of them were a little green throughout the year but they got better and they have been working really hard, so we think they will be a cohesive unit. The only one that was not a returning starter actually got a couple starts at the end of last year due to injury. He started against Southfield and did a very good job. We think they can gel if they keep that positive momentum going.”

If anything else expect coach Ronald Bellamy and his Lakers to be there again and perhaps go farther in the playoffs.

2. Orion Dragons:

Last Season Finished: 4-5: Did not qualify

Scored 219 points (158 Red, 4^th in league): Allowed 246 points (178 Red, 4^th in league)

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week One vs Chippewa Valley at Wayne State.

Projected Record: 7-2, 6-1 Red. *

LO Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Offensive Line.

WEAKNESS: Receivers, Defensive Line, and Linebackers.

This was a Dragons team that was a disappointment for the ages when looking at past seasons. Orion went 4-5, lost on homecoming for the first time since 2000, gave up plenty of points, and didn’t make the playoffs for the first time since 2000. The Dragons have not been the same team since 2012 and it showed its ugly head. Orion was just terrible defensibly a season ago allowing 246 points and have changed defensive coordinators. Dave Tooley left the program and is the new defensive coordinator at Holly. Brad Fischer takes over the reins of the defense. If anything this Orion football team has nowhere to go but up for coach Chris Bell. “We return a lot of guys who saw a lot of action. The guys have really worked hard all summer. We’ve done a lot this summer. We expect to be very big up front, we got some great athletes as well. Our secondary is going to be as good as it’s ever been, a couple of three year starters at linebackers. We got a kicker who has been a three year guy so we think we got a lot of weapons.” Bell added.

The Dragons don’t really have a true star to go to this season and returns a lot of experience from a team that was young and inexperienced last season. The Dragons have running back Keith Fields, cornerbacks Drew Casey, Jaylen Wiggins (Toledo), and Mike Jarvis. Max Hornefer will move from quarterback to wide receiver, Caiden Preiskorn will be the starting quarterback and this Orion team will have a big offensive line led by Brendan Thompson, Jeff McCarty, Chance Robertson, and Justin Cathers. “We have high expectations heading into the season. We expect a lot out of each other. There is a lot of talent and a lot of stuff going around, we expect to improve a lot from last year” said Wiggins. “We did a lot of work on the offseason and we can’t wait to get started” said Thompson. The Dragons lost running back Matt Krause, whom is now at Central Michigan must address the defensive line, and wide receivers positions but the expectations are still high in Orion “I expect a lot on both sides of the ball this year. We got a lot of communication, it’s going to be great” said linebacker and top discus thrower Cameron Shadaia. “We’ve worked hard this off season, we’ve grown a lot as a team. I think we got a lot more experience, it will be a great year” said Casey whom missed football and hockey last season due to a torn ACL and MCL in his knee.

Bell always looks forward to media day, it lets him see the athletes and players from the rest of the league. “It’s always great to see everybody and to see all the athletes. You know you’re bigger and stronger. Everybody is excited for the start of the season. It’s great to hear insight from the other coaches and it’s a great day for everybody” Bell said of the Media Day expectations. This Orion team will have tough games against Chippewa Valley at Wayne State and trips to Clarkston and West Bloomfield. The Dragons cannot afford to be one dimensional or they might not make the playoffs for a second straight season. “You got to bring it every single week. We love competing against these teams because each team is well coached with great players. Last season we had seven games that were a dogfight and this year we expect nine games that will be a dogfight week in and week out, that’s why we love our league” Bell concluded.

3. Clarkston Wolves:

Last Season Finished: 14-0: 9-0, 7-0 Red: Won Division One State Championship (Back to Back)

Scored 509 points (292 Red, 2^nd in league): Allowed 250 points (117 Red, 2^nd in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: 5

Colors: Yellow and Navy Blue.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Three at West Bloomfield.

Projected Record: 6-3, 5-2 Red. *

CLA Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Running Back, Receivers, and Experience.

WEAKNESS: Quarterback and Line Play.

The Wolves aren’t the same team as they were last season or two seasons ago when they won their first State title but they will return running back Nolan Eriksen whom had a 1,000 yard season in 2014 and is on the Mr. Football Watch list. “Well, we’re excited. We’re trying to build off of what we have done in the past and learn from it both positively and negatively. We got a great opener with Macomb Dakota so we’ll find out in a hurry what we are made off” said Coach Kurt Richardson. It wouldn’t be a surprise that Clarkston returns to the offense that did well in 2012. The Wolves defense will be a major concern for Richardson but the team is high on Carter Linton and Bryce Witherspoon among others whom have been getting some sort of hype this offseason.

There could be a quarterback competition between Anthony Reiter, Straton Harris, and Jacob Wagner but Richardson said it was Reiter’s job to lose “Anthony Reiter is our leading candidate, he has had a very good summer. He’s got a strong arm and it’s going to come down to how he handles pressure situations in which he can’t do that in practice but in game situations” Richardson added. Reiter has been the understudy of DJ Zezula whom is now at Wayne State but don’t be surprised if Harris or Wagner could see snaps if Reiter struggles.

The lines are a huge concern for Clarkston especially having to replace it’s entire offensive line. “It doesn’t matter who you have at quarterback. If your offensive line doesn’t protect him then you have no chance. He can’t throw from his butt. We graduated all five offensive lineman, all of them are playing College Football so we’re going to be young up there but those kids had a great offseason and we got eight offensive lineman fighting for five spots” Richardson said.

The Wolves schedule is no give me either especially with two of their first three games are character games with trips to Macomb Dakota and West Bloomfield and later in the season home games against Orion and the crossover. It won’t be an easy season for Clarkston, a lot of people expect the Wolves to be a playoff team but there is always that danger that they could miss the playoffs.

4. Oxford Wildcats:

Last Season Finished: 6-4: 6-3, 5-2 Red: Lost to Clarkston 31-8 in the Pre-district.

Scored 225 points (175 Red, 3^rd in league): Allowed 218 points (118 Red, 3^rd in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: 9

Colors: Blue and Yellow

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Four at Orion.

Projected Record: 6-3, 4-3 Red. *

OXF Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Offensive Line.

WEAKNESS: Size and Skill Positions.

The Wildcats will be a team to keep an eye on as they could be a sleeper heading into the season to contend for the Red crown. Brendan Lewis will be taking over at quarterback for Wallington whom has graduated. Lewis although is more of a passing quarterback but does have some running ability. He will be relied upon this season to keep the team consistent to the “Pound the Rock” theme on Oxford Road.

The Wildcats return a strong offensive line as well led by Royce Davenport, Ethan Kiern, Jared Dymond, Seth Rethkowiak, and Tyler Thorne. Oxford coach Bud Rowley is high on running back Devon Davenport and his potential impact as an athlete. John Patrick is back at fullback as well and will bring experience.

The Wildcats feel that they are being disrespected heading into the season with some experts saying they could miss the playoffs while there are those thinking they could win the Red. Experts think the reason why they could miss the playoffs is not the talent they have but the schedule they have is the reason. Oxford travels to Orion, West Bloomfield, Romeo, Clarkston, and Stoney Creek. It could be an interesting season for the Wildcats.

5. Stoney Creek Cougars:

Last Season Finished: 5-4, 3-4 Red: Did not qualify

Scored 225 points (155 Red, 6^th in league): Allowed 218 points (182 Red, 5^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Navy Blue, White, and Gold

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Two vs Oxford.

Projected Record: 4-5, 3-4 Red.

SC Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Receivers and Cornerbacks.

WEAKNESS: Offensive Line.

The Cougars will be an interesting team to watch in 2015. Stoney Creek is the defending city champs after shocking Adams in week one but losses to Oxford, Orion, Clarkston, and West Bloomfield kept the Cougars out of the playoffs last season. Although depth is a huge concern for Stoney Creek, they will be competitive and are excited to get the season started. "Hey, we’re excited about it, the guys are ready to go. Like I said up front we have had a great summer. The kids are ready and we’ll be looking forward to playing at Adams and the rest of the OAA Red struggle” said Coach Brad Zube. The Cougars will led by their cornerbacks Hunter LaFave, Issac Kozac, and Kyle Benarski. They also will have tight end Brady Campbell, Brent Pokley, and linebacker Spencer Redmond whom was at media day. “It’s going to be a great season. Coach will have us ready for Adams and every other team we face. It’s going to be a good season” said Redmond. Pokley shared the same message as Redmond “Excited, we got a great group of guys and excited to see some of the young faces come and help us out. We’ll be ready for Week One against Adams and the rest of the weeks to follow” said Pokley.  “We’ve had a great summer, we just got to keep working for week one and we’ll be ready” said Campbell.

Stoney Creek could had been a playoff team last season at 5-4 hadn’t they been forced to play Rochester but it’s something that hadn’t bothered Zube. “It’s important to us that we play both teams in our district, it’s good for the kids. I think it’s a big memory when you play teams in your school district. We wanted to play Adams week one and close with Rochester. Yeah it takes us out of the crossover but it’s a great memory for our kids and have a chance to beat your inner city rivals each year”

The Cougars could be a playoff team once again this season if they can beat at least two very good teams on the schedule and address the offensive line.

Kyle Schultz comes over from Waterford Kettering to be the new offensive coordinator. Zube will have his hands full when it comes to the schedule, his team will open up at Adams. Stoney Creek also has trips to Orion, Clarkston, and West Bloomfield but they have Oxford at home after losing 7-0 last season to the Wildcats on the blue turf. “You got to go one week at a time and prepare for these guys. We’re on the road this year at Clarkston, at Orion, it’s always hard to go into those places, at West Bloomfield, so a lot of tough road games. It’s a challenge but you got to get the work done.”

The Cougars will have a lot of work to do especially having to replace a lot of talent and experience if they want to get back to the playoff promise land.

6. Troy Athens Red Hawks:

Last Season Finished 2-7, 1-6 Red. Did not qualify

Scored 197 points (139 Red, 7^th in league): Allowed 327 points (268 Red, most in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Red and Gold.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Two at Orion.

Projected Record: 3-6, 2-5 Red.

TA Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Receivers and Kicking Game.

WEAKNESS: Defense.

The Red Hawks have been 6-21 since 2011 and 27-64 since 2005, that’s not good. The pressure will be on Coach Josh Heppener to produce now for Troy Athens if they want to make any jump up in the Red but it won’t be an easy task. The Red Hawks strength will be at wide receiver with Jake Vincent, Louis Kassak, and Eddie Oprincia leading the way for sophomore quarterback Joey Stark to throw too. They also will have some size up front led by Jared York (6.2 255 lbs.), Matt Voytush (6.5 250 lbs.), and Mitch Wochoski (6.6 275 lbs.) Bradley Robinson returns as the long snapper and has been getting college offers. “We made some significant changes in the offseason. Our guys have been working their tails off. I’ve seen a difference definitely from your typical Troy Athens team in the past” said Heppener.

The Red Hawks believe changing the attitude could change the team’s fortunes. “We’re trying to change the image, the attitude, and get the small town feel. We love rolling into Clarkston, Lake Orion and be in that atmosphere and what those guys bring to the table. Oxford as well. We want that in Troy, we want to transform this town into a football town. We’re excited about the things we are doing here” said Heppener.

Troy Athens problem has been their defense where they have allowed over 300 points ever since the playoff loss to Romeo in 2011 in each of the last three seasons. The Red Hawks have Chris Standifer and Brendan Genereau coming back. Standifer will likely be at defensive end will see time at tight end on offense. Troy Athens has 14 seniors coming back including Kevin Hazen and Curtis Hemingway whom both plays linebacker and tight end. Heppener will coach the defense this season “I’ve switched to the defensive side of the ball, I’m very excited about that. I’ve been an offensive guy through college but I have a young guy whom played for me for four years and coached with me for seven years.”

The schedule is brutal for the Red Hawks with feature trips to Orion, Oxford, Clarkston, and Stoney Creek but they do get to host West Bloomfield, crossover, and Troy.

7. Bloomfield Hills Blackhawks:

Last Season Finished 2-7, 2-5 Red: Did not qualify.

Scored 190 points (157 Red, 5^th in league): Allowed 315 points (243 Red, 7^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Purple, Gray, and Black.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Five at Troy Athens.

Projected Record: 2-7, 1-6 Red.

BH Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Experience.

WEAKNESS: Defense.

The Blackhawks are 5-13 since the merger of Andover and Lahser. Bloomfield Hills returns eight starters which has gained some optimism surrounding the program. “We had a great offseason, great attitude, and great leadership” said Coach Dan Loria. Bloomfield Hills’s problem the last two seasons have been their defense in which they have gotten shattered in the two seasons as a merged school, even though they have played some really good teams in both the Red and White the last two seasons allowing 315 points last year.

Loria likes the attitude of his team heading into the season. “We’ve had a good offseason. The thing that stands out to me the most is attitude and I have always preached attitude and what’s you doing and discipline. All the little things. The group that’s going to take the field for us this year that’s what they done and always tell them whether its sprints, whether we are in the weight room, whether we are doing at camp on our field.”

The Blackhawks will move to their new football field at the former Andover campus after spending its first two seasons on the Lahser campus and open up its new field against the back to back defending State Champs Clarkston. Bloomfield Hills could give the Wolves a battle because they gave Orion a run for their money at home last season on its homecoming. The misery could continue if the Blackhawks don’t improve the defense this season. Bloomfield Hills will have a quarterback competition as Eli Sherman or Stone Fiertz battle for the job. They must address the skill positions but cornerback Mike Alamay will help there. They will have some size coming back led by linemen Adam Zilada and Jeff Ross whom both bring experience. “Got to have talent to win no doubt about it but we show up every Friday for 48 minutes, good things are going to happen more than bad things. I’m excited, I know my coaching staff is excited, they’re great kids. I’m lucky to coach these kids on the field. They represent themselves, the program, family, community and school” Loria concluded.

The Blackhawks schedule wise have Clarkston and West Bloomfield coming to Bloomfield Hills but trips to Orion, Oxford, Walled Lake Northern, and Stoney Creek might make this season a long season.

8. Troy Colts:

Last Season Finished 1-8, 0-7 Red: Did not qualify

Scored 104 points (51 Red, fewest in league): Allowed 226 points (212 Red, 6^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Black, Red, and Gray.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week One vs Sterling Heights Stevenson.

Projected Record: 2-7, 0-7 Red.

TC Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Defense.

WEAKNESS: Offense and Youth.

The Colts was not good offensively, only scoring 104 points last season. The talent is just not there for coach Gary Griffith as there was in recent seasons at the school on Northfield Parkway but they do return five offensive starters. “We have five offensive starters coming back. I have a new offensive coordinator in Mike Hausebach” said Griffith

Troy only returns 12 seniors with the strength of its team being the defense which only allowed 14 points in non-league games. “We have four starters coming back on defense” said Griffith.

The Colts allowed 226 points last season will be led by linebacker Ramon Conty, lineman Jason JoHannson, Chase Cronwell, and Tommy Luck. The offense will be a major concern in 2015 for the black and gray as they only scored 51 total league points but they do have wide receiver Valentine Charenovia coming back this season. “We have a small senior class, they do a lot of things on and off the field” Griffith concluded.

The schedule is not friendly for the Colts as they have Clarkston, Sterling Heights Stevenson, Stoney Creek, and Orion all coming to Troy but the road is equally tricky as they travel to Oxford and Stoney Creek which won’t be easy games. If the Colts can get off to a strong start then this could be an optimistic season for them heading into the 2015 season.

Top 10 Games:

1.  Southfield at Harrison: Blue Jays and Hawks have had some classic battles and the addition of Brendan Brown and Tyrone Lyte from Harrison to Southfield will add some spice in a already heated rivalry.

2. Adams at Southfield: Both teams will be coming off tough games, we’ll see who is left standing after this one.

3. Oak Park at Farmington: We’ll see if the Falcons are for real after this one. The Knights ousted Farmington from the playoffs last season.

4. Southfield at Oak Park: Knights have lost the last three meetings to the Blue Jays. Oak Park will have its hands full with Southfield yet again.

5. Harrison at Adams: The Highlanders last beat the Hawks was 2009, they are 0-5 ever since.

6. Oak Park at Adams: Coach Greg Carter is 3-1 against the Highlanders since he took over in Knight Valley in 2011.

7. Southfield vs Detroit Cass Tech @ Wayne State: Star power and Division One recruits galore here in this matchup. The last time Southfield played Detroit Cass Tech played it was 18-14 Technicians over the Blue Jays in 2013.

8. Oak Park vs Zeeland West @ Grand Valley State: Knights defense will have their hands full against a “Wing T” Dux team that scored nearly 600 points a season ago.

9. Harrison at Oak Park: Hawks want some revenge after being shut out 27-0 at home last season by the Knights.

10. North Farmington at Farmington: This will be a big game for the Raiders, like the Oak Park vs Farmington game for the Falcons. This could be a statement game for the Raiders if they can go into Farmington and beat the Falcons.

DREAM SCHEDULE: Adams. The Highlanders have missed the playoffs two of the last three seasons but the schedule is kind to them this season. Besides a trip to Southfield, Adams has Stoney Creek, Oak Park, Farmington, and Harrison all coming to Tienkin and Adams Road. The crossover will be interesting but Coach Tony Patrino’s team should be a playoff team this season.

NIGHTMARE SCHEDULE: Harrison. The Hawks always have had good athletes and a legendary coach but the distractions will be a huge issue heading into the season and also the schedule is challenging with four home games. Harrison hosts East Kentwood and have trips to Oak Park, Adams, and the crossover. They have Southfield at home though usually in that series the road team has had the upper hand. It could be interesting for Coach John Herrington with the schedule his Hawks have this season.

TEAM THAT HAS A LOT TO PROVE: Farmington. The Falcons won a division they shouldn’t had been in last season (Blue) but losing their top wide receiver after transferring to Waterford Mott (third school in four years) will hurt this team. Farmington lost to Oak Park in the playoffs last season and if they were in the White last season they wouldn’t had made the playoffs. The Falcons play Oak Park, Southfield, and Adams in weeks 2-4 with Oak Park and Southfield coming to Farmington. They haven’t beaten Harrison in a while and they come to Farmington as well. The Falcons could very well miss the playoffs this season.

TEAM THAT IS IN TROUBLE: North Farmington. Ever since the Raiders were in the White they have struggled mightily going a combined 7-11 unlike when they made the playoffs in 2013 at 5-4 and 7-3 in 2011 when they were in the Blue. The schedule is manageable early with Pontiac, Seaholm, and Rochester but they have to play Southfield, Harrison, Oak Park, Farmington, and Adams from week’s four to eight before the crossover. North Farmington could be a four or five win team pending if they win the crossover, beat Seaholm, and win one of the big four then they could be a playoff team. Don’t know if it is happening though.

1. Southfield Blue Jays

Last Season Finished: 9-4: 7-2, 6-1 White. Lost to Warren De LaSalle 31-7 in State Semifinals.

SFD Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Depth at Most Positions.

WEAKNESS: Chemistry and Defensive Line.

Blue Jays coach Tim Conley has had a tough off season with the shocking death of linebacker Darrius Cooley whom passed away in July. This could be the most talented team that Conley has had at Southfield and could be a State title contender in 2015. Southfield will merge with Lathrup and become one Southfield High School next season.

But Southfield still feels they still have some unfinished business as they want to get to Ford Field for the first time in school history. “Last year (2013) we talked about unfinished business that was our motivation. Having a successful season and losing in 2013 (lost to Seaholm) in the first season. Last year we handled our business a bit and we want to continue our success. We want to take the next step of our program. We went to the State semifinals but unlike some great coaches we have never been to the State finals that’s our number one goal, we want to win the league, district, and regional championships” said Assistant Principal and assistant coach Vernon Burden.

The Blue Jays did get stronger as Tyrone Lyte and Brendan Brown transferred from Harrison and since they live in Southfield, they are both eligible to play right away. There has been some hype surrounding quarterback Sam Johnson III, whom transferred from Dearborn and lives in the Southfield area. He has been getting college offers as a freshman. The Blue Jays might try something similar to what Detroit Cass Tech did in 2014 when the Technicians had a top notch running back in Mike Weber whom is at Ohio State now to aid alongside a young quarterback in Rodney Hall. “It’s no different having Malik McDonnell or Matt Falcon. That player has the expectation of competing for a spot. When Malik McDonnell or Rob Thompson came in they had a four or five star recruit. He will be treated like any other freshman #14” said Burden. The Blue Jays have the tools to do that with Johnson III and running back Matt Falcon. Falcon is a senior and will be heading to Michigan next season. The Blue Jays will also have top notch receivers such as Immanuel Orr, Mackenzie Macon, Justin Cain, and Brandon Gray. Southfield does have a very fast and talented defense as well but there is some question with chemistry and mindset especially after what happened in July. The Blue Jays went to the State semifinals last season but lost to Warren De LaSalle and is expected with the speed and athletes they have to do well this season.

2. Adams Highlanders

Last Season Finished: 5-4, 4-3 White. Did not qualify

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Five vs Oak Park.

RA Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Size and Experience.

WEAKNESS: Line Play and Running Back.

This could be the first time since 2003 that the Highlanders have size for Coach Tony Patrino when 2003 they won a State Championship in Division Two. Adams have missed the playoffs two of the last three seasons being in a tough league and not meeting expectations. “We had a rough year last year. We played seven sophomores and we’re going to try and turn it around” said Patrino.

Last season the defense was a disaster as they allowed 211 points which was the most under a Patrino led Highlanders team. Adams will have seven starters returning on that unit. “We’re trying to get our tradition back on and off the field. 5-4 doesn’t cut it. So we worked our butt off this summer and try to get where we belong in the playoffs” said Patrino.

Kyle Wood returns at quarterback and he will have weapons to throw too in receivers Mark Patrino and Mitchell Sokol. Ben Petersmark, Adam Slating, Stevie Roncelli, Danny Sanders, and Vincent Gray all return as well. Adams must find a running back for its veer option offense, so far it looks like John Brusha and Jamie Perry has the early edge at running back. “Kyle makes it easier as a runner, he’s a three year starter as a junior. John (Brusha) and Jamie (Perry) are young guys who are going to play the fullback position for us and we expect to have balance” Patrino said.

The schedule is manageable for the Highlanders with Stoney Creek, Harrison, and Oak Park coming to Rochester and a trip to Southfield isn’t easy. Adams wants revenge after losing to Stoney Creek last season but the rivalry is starting to get back in the fold. “We enjoy it, the OAA really wants us to build a rivalry with them. We played Clarkston for all those years and this is kind of an OAA thing to play Stoney (Creek) and now we play them. It’s becoming a little but more heated, we’re excited to play the game” Patrino concluded.

Expect high expectations and a return to the playoffs for the Highlanders this season.

3. Harrison Hawks

Last Season Finished: 10-3: 7-2, 6-1 White. Lost to Muskegon Mona Shores 25-24 in State Semifinals

Scored 437 points (273 White, 2^nd in league): Allowed 206 points (109 in White, 3^rd in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: 4

FHH Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Defense and Play Makers.

WEAKNESS: Handling Distractions, Running Back, and Depth.

When looking at the Hawks there has been rumblings going on that this could be the final season as a program pending on what is going on with the Farmington School district’s building and safety committee’s report of closing the school due to declining enrollment in the district. “It’s upsetting to the kids but I’m optimistic we will keep Harrison going. We’ll have two years for sure and I think it’s going to be more” said Coach John Herrington.  

Herrington felt much better what is going on with the program. “We’re pretty happy now that things are moving in our direction. I think they are going to keep it open. We won’t discuss it on Monday and coach them up and have some fun.”

Harrison should be motivated after the way they lost to Muskegon Mona Shores in the State semifinals 25-24 last season.

The Hawks will be young this upcoming season which hasn’t bothered Herrington or his players. “We got only four starters coming back but we got good talent. Our Junior Varsity were good, our younger kids are very good so we’re looking forward to a great year even though I am getting a little bit older” Herrington said. “We got to keep everyone focused and only worry about what we can control” said linebacker Jarred Charr. “We don’t have a lot of numbers but we have a lot of talent so we’ll work as hard as possible and get as far as we can” said Harrison quarterback and playmaker Anthony Giovanni.

The Hawks will be solid on defense, led by defensive end Khalid Kareem whom will be heading to Alabama next season. Kareem will be forced to go two ways this season because of the departures according to Herrington. “He’s going to do a great job. He was dream team last season and I expect him to be better. He has to go both ways this year so we’ll see how that works out but he’ll mainly be our defensive stud.” Kareem is more than willing to do what it takes for them to win “We’re going to win a State championship, going undefeated just going to win.”

Inside linebacker Jarred Charr returns and expects to have a big season. “We’re going to win as many games and come out on top.”

Harrison was also bitten by two players leaving the program as Tyrone Lyte and Brendan Brown transferred to Southfield. Herrington will have a quarterback competition as either Giovanni or David Vinsky will have the job but either way both those guys will play somewhere. According to Herrington he said that Vinsky has the early edge at quarterback while Giovanni will be on defense. The Hawks will be very athletic and talented heading into the season and is expected to be competitive in the White.

The schedule is always tough for Harrison as they host East Kentwood to start the season but the White is no easy picnic either. “The White is great, I thought it was great last year. We ended up in a three way tie (with Southfield and Oak Park) for first. It’s going to be much of the same with Southfield, Oak Park, us, Adams is improved and Farmington moving back in is going to be a good team so like every game it’s going to be a dog fight” Herrington said. “The White is one of the toughest in the state, just got to play hard and win everyday” Kareem said. “We have a lot of competition in this division. We’re looking to be big contenders this year and prepare for who we have” said Giovanni. “We know every week it will be a tough week. We’re going to prepare and practice and we’ll definitely come out on top” Charr said.

Herrington is also excited to see Farmington come back up from the Blue to the White. It sets up a possible city championship with the Falcons and North Farmington. “I love it, we went many years with or without playing both or neither and the fact we are in the same league it makes it much more interesting for the student body” he concluded.

4. Oak Park Knights

Last Season Finished: 8-3: 7-2. 6-1 White. Lost to Southfield 14-13 in District Finals

OP Thoughts:

STRENGTHS: Defense.

WEAKNESS: Depth and Offense.

The Knights lost a lot of talent last season especially with John Kelly going to Tennessee but they do have some talent returning as well. Dylan Stackhouse is expected to take over for Kelly at running back this season. “I think John (Kelly) did a fantastic job and help us train our young men and we’ll definitely have some guys to replace him” said Coach and Athletic Director Greg Carter.

Ever since Carter came to Knight Valley in 2011, he has made Oak Park into a power in the tough White being consistent every season he has been there. The Knights return play makers in cornerbacks Abdullah Yaseen, Miles Daniel and Darius Stokes. Oak Park also returns lineman Ja’Raymond Hall, Martin McCall, and quarterback Chauncey Lowman to a team whom did very well last season especially on defense where they allowed the fewest in the White. “They have been tremendously working hard this summer, we’re excited for the opportunity.”

The schedule is interesting as the Knights travel to Grand Valley State to take on Zeeland West and take on the Wing T offense the Dux has. “It is better playing a Wing T team early then later.” Carter said. He coached against Zeeland West when he was at Inkster where his team won 29-22. “It’s an interesting matchup, they were the defending State semifinalist and State Champs the year before that (Division Three-2013.) We know we got our hands full so I like to play tremendous teams if we can and in the very first game because it catches the attention of your kids.”

Oak Park has games against Harrison, Southfield, and Adams which are also not easy games either. “We are really excited about our season, we know our schedule is extremely treacherous. After we play Zeeland West, we come back and play Farmington and then Harrison. You got to be ready in this league, hopefully we’ll be ready to do that” Carter said.

If the Knights wants to return to the playoffs it must stay the course Carter has them on. .“Our expectations is to play well each and every week. We ask our seniors to help our young kids to help them develop.”

5. Farmington Falcons

Last Season Finished 7-3: 7-2, 7-0 in the Blue. Lost to Oak Park 38-13 in Pre-district

Scored 357 points (300 Blue, most in league): Allowed 201 points (77 Blue, fewest in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Dark Blue and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Two vs Oak Park.

Projected Record: 4-5, 3-4 White.

FARM Thoughts:

STRENGTHS: Wide Receivers and Defense.

WEAKNESS: Quarterback.

The Falcons return to the White after spending a one year hiatus from the White. They won the Blue last season. “We’re happy to be back in the OAA White and give us an opportunity to renew the rivalries we have developed in the last eight years and have high expectations” said Coach John Beuthal.

Farmington does return some talent from a Blue title team a season ago but they did lose Desmond Fitzpatrick whom transferred to Waterford Mott for his senior season and has committed to Louisville next season. The Falcons returns running back and linebacker Kyle Brunson along with linebacker David Reese whom will be heading to Michigan next season. Brunson and Reese are very critical to a defense which is expected to be the strength of this team for Beuthal. “Our kids are in fantastic condition, we worked hard, had as many as 80 kids in our summer program” he said.

The question is quarterback where Andrew McGovern is expected to take over the reins as a sophomore for Kyle Collins whom graduated. “The kids are buying in and we talk about work ethic” Beuthal concluded.

The Falcons league schedule is vicious with home games against Southfield, Oak Park, and Harrison and a trip to Adams won’t be easy or the crossover. Farmington could be a playoff team but they must beat one of the top teams if they want to make it eight of nine seasons in the playoffs.

6. Seaholm Maples

Last Season Finished 4-5, 3-5 White. Did not qualify.

Scored 196 points (139 White, 5^th in league): Allowed 282 points (219 White, 5^th in league)

Colors: Maple Red and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week One at Groves.

Projected Record: 3-6, 2-5 White.

BS Thoughts:

STRENGTHS: Running Back.

WEAKNESS: Quarterback Play and Defense.

The Maples didn’t make the playoffs for the first since 2010 and allowed the most points in program history at 282 points last season but don’t tell that to Coach Jim DeWald, he is looking ahead to the season. “Expectations are always high. We made a few changes, a little bit different focus on execution” said DeWald. Lee Murray takes the reins at quarterback this season and he is expected to throw the ball down the field according to DeWald and they want to keep the opposing team off the field “We want to keep it a low possession game. Murray meanwhile has a lot of expectations for himself going forward “We take it one week at a time, cherish every opportunity and prepare like it’s your last game” Murray said.

The Maples must beat at least two very good teams if they want to return to the playoffs and playing Groves first is not going to be easy along with having to play Southfield, Oak Park, Adams, and Harrison. Justin Newberry returns at running back and is expected to carry the load again “We have been working hard all summer. We have high expectations. This year we have a high chance of making the playoffs” Newberry said. Troy Hariston returns at fullback which helps but they need good quarterback play and balance to help a stressed defense. “Last year we only had 12 seniors. We got more depth, we want to get into the playoffs this year” said Hariston. That will be the major question even though they could struggle again this season.

7. North Farmington Raiders

Last Season Finished 4-5, 2-5 White. Did not qualify

Scored 196 points (126 White, 6^th in league): Allowed 259 points (229 White, 6^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Brown, Yellow, and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Five at Farmington.

Projected Record: 3-6, 1-6 White.

NF Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Kicking Game.

WEAKNESS: Skill Positions.

The Raiders are an odd team to figure out. They have been good against Blue teams but they have struggled against White competition in its history. That must change if North Farmington wants to return back to the playoffs. The Raiders returns linebackers Jake Cohen and Mike Knox to their defense. Nathan Perry returns as a fullback and linebacker and lineman Matt Haire returns as well. “This is about the guys in the program. The kids represent us long after in our community and our jobs. I’m very proud of our program and the young men who represent us day in and day out” Coach Todd Schultz said.

There are questions on both sides of the football for Schultz even though 30 seniors return from last season. The schedule is interesting early but it’s difficult late in the season. The biggest strength for North Farmington will be its kicking game led by Lynn Lerner. Lerner will be a junior kicker and is expected to compete and contribute for the Raiders.

If North Farmington wants to be successful they must beat the upper echelon teams especially in the White. “We’re excited too, we know we are in one of the most competitive leagues in the State of Michigan. We’re proud to strap the helmets every Friday night and go to work against some great teams” Schultz said. They beat Troy Athens last season and hopefully that game will jumpstart them this season.

8. Rochester Falcons

Last Season Finished 1-8, 1-6 White. Did not qualify

Scored 68 points (58 White, 7^th in league): Allowed 312 points (228 White, 7^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Royal Blue and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week One vs Lapeer.

Projected Record: 0-9, 0-7 White.

ROCH Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Wide Receivers.

WEAKNESS: Line Play.

The Falcons finished last season with its worst record since 2009 and it’s expected not to get any better this season. Coach Erik Vernon returns lineman Zach Hale along with quarterback Daniel Dopanio and wide receiver Sam Wolf. “We’re really excited, we have a great group of seniors. They have really worked hard this off season and they’ve put the time in. We took some lumps last year but we have a lot of returning starters (nine offense, nine defense) so they have that experience and understand what it takes in the OAA. You got to come out, play hard and practice hard” said Vernon.

His players agree even though the stats don’t say a lot. “I’m a lot more confident this year, we got a great group of seniors coming back with some great leadership. So I’m very proud to be a part of this team and looking forward to Lapeer” said Dopanio. “I think we are so mentally and physically stronger than we were last year that we will put up a battle with everybody especially Lapeer” said Wolf.

Vernon and his players mention the Lapeer game especially because last season it was the first home game as one school or “One Lapeer” for the Lightning and they destroyed the Falcons 42-0. “They are very well coached, great talent, they are always big. They must have a big weight program up there. They play football right away and we’re excited for the challenge. We went up there (Lapeer County), our kids were a little surprised by the atmosphere and intensity they play. Gives us something to shoot for this year”

Rochester has not improved on its defense which has been a huge problem. The Falcons allowed 312 points and its offense didn’t fare much better when they only scored 68 points last season. In their first five games last season, the Falcons were outscored 169-21 in that stretch of play. “We had a tough year last year but we have nine returning starters The Falcons haven’t made the playoffs since 2010 when they lost to Utica Eisenhower in the pre district playoffs.

Another problem that has been bugging the Falcons have been its city rivals. Last season Stoney Creek hammered Rochester 42-10 and lost to Adams once again. The Falcons have not beaten the Highlanders since 1996, something the Rochester players want to change this season when they go to Adams. “I’m extremely excited to play Adams like every year. I’m so much confident in this year’s team that we are more mentally prepared to vs Adams. We’re definitely stronger. It will be a pretty even matchup this year” said Dopanio. “I think ever since I was a freshman, the class of 2016 has put up a battle with the class of 2016 from Adams so now coming back being seniors. I think it’s going to be a good matchup” said Wolf.

The Falcons will get tested early and has a tough schedule with Lapeer to kick off the season. Rochester has to play Adams a team they haven’t beaten since 1996 along with Harrison, Oak Park, Southfield, and Stoney Creek. “Not an off week” Vernon concluded. It could be a long season in Rochester.

Top 10 Games:

1. Groves at Avondale: Falcons toughest game of the season will be this one, it could decide the Blue as well.

2. Berkley at Groves: If Yellow Jackets don’t contend for the Blue then this could be the game that decides it. In what could be an interesting Homecoming game, Berkley has had a habit of ruining homecomings. The Bears and Falcons have been even since 2010 (3-3) with Groves and Berkley splitting the meetings last season with the Falcons taking the Bears out of the playoffs.

3. Ferndale at Groves:  This is a statement game for the Eagles to see if they belong.

4. Avondale at Berkley: The Bears and Yellow Jackets have been a close rivalry (since 2007) with Berkley winning the last two meetings in Auburn Hills by a combined four points.

5. Lathrup at Groves: This game is a must win for the Chargers, they lost 20-7 to the Falcons a season ago.

6. Berkley at Ferndale: Bears have won the last five meetings with the Eagles but last season was 20-14. Could it be different this season???

7. Royal Oak at Lathrup: First meeting since 2013 for these two teams. Could tell if the Ravens belong or not. The Chargers will honor Coach Keith Stephens whom passed away from cancer in November.

8. New Boston Huron at Avondale: Tough matchup here for the Yellow Jackets. The Chiefs made the Division Three semifinals last season.

9. Holly at Berkley: Bears destroyed the Bronchos 35-7 last season, think Holly remembers that score???

10. Avondale at Ferndale: Yellow Jackets have had the Eagles number recently.

DREAM SCHEDULE: Groves. The Falcons may have the best player in Cedric Boswell and best team in the division. Groves would like to improve upon last season since Farmington moved back up to the White.  The Falcons have to go to Birmingham to kick off the season against their arch rivals and Auburn Hills (Avondale) later in the season. Ferndale, Ann Arbor Pioneer, and Berkley come to Beverly Hills this season. Groves could be in line for a special season.

NIGHTMARE SCHEDULE: Avondale. The Yellow Jackets missed the playoffs at 5-4 after suffering a horrible loss to Waterford Kettering 63-20 last season. The schedule this season is brutal as New Boston Huron, a team that went to the Division Three State semifinals last season and also Groves comes to Auburn Hills for Homecoming in what will be a big game atmosphere. Not to mention that Avondale has to go to Lathrup, Berkley, and Ferndale. The Bears have beaten the Yellow Jackets the last two seasons in Auburn Hills. That’s tough to say the least for Coach Steve Deutsch.

TEAM THAT HAS A LOT TO PROVE: Ferndale. The Eagles made some huge steps last season finishing 4-5 under first year coach Eric Royal. Ferndale is expected to make that next step in year two. The schedule is manageable with an early trip to Garden City. Detroit Consortium, Hazel Park, Avondale, and Berkley come to Ferndale. Their toughest road game will be at Beverly Hills but if Ferndale can at least go 6-3 it will be a huge step in the second year of Coach Eric Royal.

TEAM THAT IS IN TROUBLE: Royal Oak. The Ravens enter the season with their fourth coach in five seasons in Jim McMann. Royal Oak had no business being in the White last season as they were destroyed by everyone recent years. The Ravens are 6-57 since 2008, including four 0-9 seasons. The schedule is difficult for Royal Oak with visits to Berkley and Avondale along with hosting Groves to close out the league portion of the season. Not to mention the Ravens play the team they replace in Farmington to kick off at home. Royal Oak’s best chance of getting a win this season could be its final game of the season as they play Livonia Franklin at home. It could be a tough season again for the Ravens.

BG Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Running Game.

WEAKNESS: Quarterback Play.

The Falcons will be solid this upcoming season for Coach Brandon Flaherty. Groves returns eight starters on defense from a team that won seven games last season. The Falcons have Cedric Boswell and Ernest Allen at running back and receivers Collin Heard, Nicholas Moore, and Chase Swoopes. Boswell will be heading to Iowa for next season. 

The question for Flaherty is the quarterback position where either Doug Rouche or Beeau Kewley will have to replace Zach Van Fossen whom graduated last season. Groves must win a big game not within their own division if they want to make noise this season and also in the playoffs.

2. Avondale Yellow Jackets

Last Season Finished: 5-4, 4-3 Blue. Did not qualify

Scored 275 points (209 Blue, 3^rd in league): Allowed 201 points (130 Blue, 3^rd in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: 10

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Five at Berkley

AHA Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Both Lines.

WEAKNESS: Running Game.

The Yellow Jackets last season lost to Waterford Kettering that cost them a trip to the playoffs. However Coach Steve Deutsch is excited for the season to start “excited, numbers are up (60-70 kids.) Good group of hard working boys” Deutsch said and he mentioned they will have a fullback this season as well. The question for the Yellow Jackets is will quarterback Travis Janes return but it is looking like it’s not likely. If not then Deutsch will have quarterback Tyler Grosz and the team is rallying around him. “Losing Travis hurts, he made a name for himself. I have confidence with the pieces around me” Grosz said. Avondale will be led by Ahmad Sharon whom will be an athlete this season. Vincent Wright is expected to replace Josh Holloman whom graduated and is at Cincinnati at running back. The Yellow Jackets will be solid up front as well with most of their offensive and defensive lines coming back stronger even though the defense allowed 201 points last season. Avondale also returns defensive end Jeremiah Evans, Chris Keys, and Brendan Kuhn.  “We have a bit of everything this year, pretty excited” said Kuhn.  “We work as a team, go hard, and have a strong team bond” said Evans.

If everything works out Avondale could return to the playoffs this season and could be back in the Blue race.  “This group came to me and said Coach we don’t want to have that anymore. We need to make a couple of changes” Deutsch said.

The summer changes seemed to pay off for the Yellow Jackets. “We are all very confident, should have a better season than last season” Keys said. The schedule is interesting for Avondale in 2015 as they will host New Boston Huron, a team that went to the State semifinals last season and will host Waterford Kettering whom is going to run a triple option this season. “New Boston Huron right now is our number one goal. We changed our scrimmage (play Waterford Mott) and opponents. Want to give the boys a challenge” Deutsch concluded.

3. Berkley Bears

Last Season Finished 6-4: 6-3, 5-2 Blue. Lost to Groves 35-13 in Pre-district

Scored 274 points (200 Blue, 4^th in league): Allowed 226 points (133 Blue, 4^th in league)

BER Thoughts:

STRENGTH: The Two Way game.

WEAKNESS: Running Back and Line Play.

The Bears have a lot of high expectations this season. Berkley made the playoffs for the first time since 2010 finishing at 6-3 and they want to make it back to the playoffs this season. “I feel that this has been the best offseason strength wise but we are younger than last year” said Coach Chris Sikoria.

Berkley has gotten much stronger in the weight room but can it bring success? “We’re going to have 30 plus juniors, several of them hitting the weight room non stop, having kids that are going to deadlift over 500 pounds, swatting over 500 pounds, benching over 300 pounds as incoming juniors so that makes us very optimistic but really that doesn’t take place without our assistant coaches and the guys that have been outstanding leaders throughout our off season” Sikoria concluded.

The Bears will be led by the quarterback-receiver combination of Nolan Given (wide receiver) and Austen Wood (quarterback.) Given caught 60 plus passes for 700 yards last season. Wood also plays defense at linebacker had 113 tackles. The question will be a running game for Berkley and whether they can find someone to help them at that spot. Carlton Williams is a guy that Sikoria is high on heading into the season. Chauncey Bridgewater will be relied upon at least taking the pressure off of Given and will be Wood’s second option at wide receiver. Ian King is expected to be the leader on both offensive and defensive lines this season.

The Bears will have the defense to be competitive despite the fact they lost to Groves in the playoffs last season. Berkley has tough matchup week one with an improved Holly team at Hurley Field. It could be a make or break season in Berkley this season.

4. Ferndale Eagles

Last Season Finished: 4-5, 3-4 Blue. Did not qualify.

Scored 260 points (188 Blue, 5^th in league): Allowed 253 points (170 Blue, 6^th in league)

Colors: Brown and Yellow.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Three vs Berkley.

Projected Record: 6-3, 4-3 Blue. *

FERN Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Defense.

WEAKNESS: Quarterback.

Eagles Coach Eric Royal improved Ferndale’s record to 4-5 last season and could be in line to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008 but they do have to replace their quarterback and wide receivers on offense but Royal is hopeful that this could be a special year in Ferndale. “I’m very optimistic, very excited heading into the season. We made some changes, we are 110 percent committed” said Royal. Ronald Gohagon returns at running back and is a captain. Athlete Gradell Mosley returns as well and will be used at wide receiver and free safety. Linemen Joseph White and Cody Foss return to help the lines this year up front.

Ferndale outscored their opponents 260-253 but allowed 63 points to Division five power Almont last season. The defense is solid coming back and will be the strength of the Eagles but there are still challenges that remain. “We have our challenges of being the smallest school in the OAA (650 students heading into the 2015-2016 school year.) We’re not using that as an excuse, I think we are using it as a reason to work harder and our boys have accepted that challenge to do that this year so I’m looking forward to the season” Royal also mentioned.

Expect big things for the Eagles this season. They do have a tough schedule though but Royal is ready to see his team make the next step in year two of his system at his alma maunder “I honestly feel last season we competed with everyone, we lost a lot of close games. We got to finish them” Royal concluded.

5. Lathrup Chargers

Last Season Finished: 4-5, 3-4 Blue. Did not qualify

Scored 165 points (117 Blue, 6^th in league): Allowed 199 points (145 Blue, 5^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Red and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Three at Groves.

Projected Record: 5-4, 3-4 Blue.

SL Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Defense.

WEAKNESS: Offense.

The Chargers are a team to watch in their final season as a school before they merge with Southfield next season to become the new Southfield High School. Lathrup returns 25 seniors for new coach Jason Solomon whom moved up from an assistant coach to the head coach. “Our expectation is to play and to compete with everyone. We expect to have a big year and make the playoffs this year” Solomon said. The Chargers will have some talent in Reggie Harris, Vincent Bradford, Greg Gilliam, Jordan Mitchell, Sterling Alexander, and Eyimora Uwazurke. The offense will be key if the Chargers wants to compete. The offense wasn’t good last season as they only scored 117 points in the Blue.

The Chargers lost coach Keith Stephens whom passed away in November to cancer. Lathrup will honor Stephens in its week two home game with Royal Oak. “With the passing of Coach Stephens. The team became more unified from the players on down to the Junior Varsity and Freshman levels. The seniors dedicated their season to Coach Stephens” Soloman added. Lathrup allowed under 200 points last season. The Chargers must address the offense if they want to move up and make the playoffs and the schedule is no easy challenge either facing Detroit University Prep in week one, “We wanted to schedule someone who is tough. We want a good opening game for us” Soloman said.

Soloman concluded his media day an interesting quote to the media. “No matter what the challenges are in life, it’s always important to stay the course."

6. Hazel Park Vikings

Last Season Finished: 0-9, 0-7 Blue. Did not qualify

Scored 20 points (20 Blue, fewest in league): Allowed 416 points (309 Blue, worst in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Dark Red, Black, and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week One at Warren Fitzgerald.

Projected Record: 3-6, 2-5 Blue.

HP Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Quarterback/Face of Franchise.

WEAKNESS: Depth and Talent.

Vikings coach Kyle Rowley will have his hands full this season, fixing a team that only scored 20 points last season and the second smallest enrollment in the OAA. Hazel Park hasn’t won a game since 2013 and the Vikings want to change that this season. “Not much to talk about when it comes to Hazel Park football and the last couple of years have been quite tough but hey it is what is, you just got to strap them up everyday and get to work” Rowley said.

The Vikings will be led by quarterback Jared Schultz. It is possible that Schultz could play fullback and linebacker. The Vikings also have Jaylen Adams whom could play quarterback this season. Adams according to Rowley said that he can play anywhere on the field and was listed as an athlete. Hazel Park also has tight end/defensive end Torrian Belton. All three players are expected to be huge this season for the Vikings.

Line play will be a huge concern heading into the season. Hazel Park great Dakota Ogles returns as an assistant coach, the star running back was on its playoff team in 2010. If Rowley can get the numbers back up and the talent level very similar to the boys basketball team then the Vikings can get some wins this season. “We like to say no excuses whatever you got, bring it and we roll like that everyday” Rowley concluded.

7. Pontiac Phoenix

Last Season Finished: 1-7, 1-6 Blue. Did not qualify

Scored 61 points (55 Blue, 7^th in league): Allowed 301 points (259 Blue, 7^th in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Purple, Silver, Black, and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week One at North Farmington.

Projected Record: 2-7, 1-6 Blue.

PON Thoughts:

STRENGTH: Belief in Each Other.

WEAKNESS: Depth.

The Phoenix have had a tough off season and now will have its third coach in three seasons with the shocking passing of Coach John Lloyd whom passed away of a brain aneurysm in November. Pete Scott is the new coach at Pontiac taking over for Lloyd. He has kept the same principles that Lloyd had in his first season.

The Phoenix have kept a connection within the community with its toughness and grit and they are excited to get the season started “We’re excited, we’re pretty optimistic. The OAA Blue traditionally has been pretty wide open. We’re not making any predictions or placing any expectations other than that we’re going to try and win the day and work hard as we can every single day just to try to get a little bit better and a little bit smarter as football players” Scott said.

Scott knows he will have a tough chore getting the Phoenix where they ought to be at. Pontiac has had financial problems, a 50 percent graduation rate, and low numbers that have impacted the program. “The circumstances that we have to go through that’s what makes us a tight knit football team. I think that’s really our source of strength as oppose to an obstacle for us because we realize it, it’s in the papers, it’s in the news publications. You can’t hide from it, everyone knows the difficult financial circumstances that we’re under and our community is under but we always find a way, that’s kind of our mantra. We find a way to get by, we find a way to get to practice. We find a way to feed ourselves. We find a way to do a lot more with less and that’s a real pride for us” Scott said.

His players quarterback and cornerback Jhamal Hazard and running back and linebacker QaVon Mason share Scott’s message. “With the situation, it’s a motivation, focus for us to work harder than other teams that got that we don’t have and to work harder and raise potential to help others reach the same thing” said Mason.

Scott will have his hands full fixing a defense that allowed 301 points a season ago but the players believe in Scott and each other. They want to prove everybody wrong. “We know our backs are against the wall and it’s a huge target on our back. We know everyone thinks we’re down and out and use that as motivation. Where we come from is a struggle, we just take it in stride and the win the day” said Hazard. “Stay motivated, stay focused, stay strong as a team. Work hard and maybe we’ll come out on top. Just staying focused, working hard. Team Chemistry” said Mason.

One message for Pontiac, it’s students, and city is always important and that is the believe and each other and team. “It doesn’t matter where we come from as long as we finish strong together” said Hazard.

 8. Royal Oak Ravens

Last Season Finished: 0-9, 0-7 White. Did not qualify

Scored 55 points (45 White, fewest in league): Allowed 397 points (321 White, most in league)

Ranking to Start the Season: NR

Colors: Black, Blue, Gray, and White.

Game That Will Decide Their Season: Week Three at Avondale.

Projected Record: 1-8, 0-7 Blue.

RO Thoughts:

STRENGTH: New Coaching Staff.

WEAKNESS: Everywhere.

The Ravens will have their fourth coach in five seasons taking the helm as Ray McMann takes over for Coach Tim Chapman whom resigned in November after only one season. McMann is well known at Royal Oak coaching in the younger leagues. He will have a tough chore for a program that is 6-57 since 2008 and needs stability in the worst possible way.  “We want to just compete. Working hard, trying to build character with the young men we have” said McMann.

The move down from the White to the Blue will help the Ravens as they could get some wins but they must produce especially on defense where they were the worst defense in the OAA allowing close to 400 points. Royal Oak will be led by linebacker Everett Bateman, lineman James Hahn, center Alex Pauls, Athlete Brendan Beerer, and new quarterback Bobby Greene. “One School, One Town, One team create a culture” added McMann but that will be tested when Farmington comes week one. “They are a good team. Playing up a division is always tough” he concluded.
