Clarkston has their new Girls Basketball Coach.

Written Wednesday June 9th at 8:40 PM

Clarkston will have a new girls basketball coach this winter and it’s a familiar face within the program.

The Wolves named Aaron Goodnough the new Varsity head coach on Wednesday. He takes over for John Weyer whom shockingly left the program back in April.

Goodnough coached the junior varsity team last season with Weyer. He does not have the varsity coaching experience. What helps is that he knows many of the girls from being in the PR1DE AAU program.

“I am extremely excited to hire and work with Aaron (Goodnough) as the next Varsity Girls Basketball Coach in Clarkston. I am confident in Aaron’s ability to provide structure and development for our program. Aaron is going to challenge and push our athletes to play a very fast pace oriented offense while working even harder on the defensive side of the ball. Aaron is a passionate coach and the program will benefit from his coaching style. I am excited to see what the future holds for the Wolves” said Clarkston Athletic Director Jeff Kosin.

Weyer led the program to two district titles and a 34-9 record during that span. He was 44-19 in his three seasons in Clarkston.

The Wolves have a lot of talented players coming back for Goodnough in Maddie Skourpski, Izzy Hadley, Ryan Bordogna, Emerson Wood, Kiera Tomlie, Maddie Zacharis, Emily Valencia, Sophia Walker, and Ava Hernandez. Program strength is still strong in Clarkston despite the coaching change.

However the culture and familiarity should be the same.

The Wolves will be in the Red this winter and go up against Stoney Creek, West Bloomfield, Groves, Troy, Royal Oak, and Southfield Arts and Tech. The district is unknown at this time.

Goodnough knows the division inside out.

Thoughts

I really like the Goodnough hire a lot. This was a great move by Kosin. Even though he doesn’t have a ton of varsity coaching experience but the team he inherits does which should make the transition period a little bit easier.

Familiarity played a huge role which should really eases the transition as mentioned.

The Goodnough hire really doesn’t change much with Clarkston at all even though there will be a few different kinks here and there but in all reality expect pretty much the Wolves to be very good this winter and also in the future ahead.
