Romeo at Stoney Creek: The Cougars earned their first ever playoff win last week by beating Chippewa Valley 28-21 at home. The reason they won that game was because of their veteran laden offensive line and Cam Burford. Burford had 44 carries for 250 yards, two touchdowns, and grabbed an interception in the game. Stoney Creek is not just Burford or the veteran offensive line they have. They have some very good and talented hardworking players especially at quarterback in Ryan Echout along with a very good defense that is well coached under former Troy coach and defensive coordinator Gary Griffith. The Cougars knew they were going to play another MAC Red opponent in the district finals but the team they are going to play is Romeo and not Macomb Dakota. There was a very controversial play that gave the Bulldogs a 15-14 road victory over the Cougars 15-14 last week. Romeo has won three straight road games coming into this matchup after a unusual 2-4 start. The Bulldogs have a very good running back in Ryan St. Clair, along with a solid quarterback in Logan Rolfs, and wide receiver Luke Rolfs. Romeo came back from 14-3 down to win that game as well. The coaching matchup is very interesting as well between Coach Nick Merlo and Coach Curt Rienas. This is shaping up to be a very interesting game and it’s the first meeting on the football field between these two neighborhood rivals. There are a lot of similarities than differences between Stoney Creek and Romeo.

SANDY DUNES PICK: STONEY CREEK 42, ROMEO 14.

LOCKE PICK: STONEY CREEK 17, ROMEO 14.

DUNLAP PICK: STONEY CREEK 21, ROMEO 10.

BURNEY PICK: STONEY CREEK 33, ROMEO 28.

STICK PICK: STONEY CREEK 24, ROMEO 7.

COTTER PICK: STONEY CREEK 35, ROMEO 14.

West Bloomfield at Sterling Heights Stevenson: This should be the best matchup in the State with two powerhouse programs colliding at Runkel Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers has allowed only three points in five weeks including a 56-3 blowout of Troy in the Swamp last week. All of the talk and hype that Sterling Heights Stevenson has heard is about running back/wide receiver Donovan Edwards and rightfully so but West Bloomfield has other players besides Edwards that are more than capable to make an impact as well in quarterback Alex Short, lineman Amir Herring and running backs Mekhi Elam and Dillon Tatum. The Titans earned a 19-14 victory over Southfield Arts and Tech at Runkel Field last week after going to a Wing T offense in the second half after going to a spread look to start the game. Sterling Heights Stevenson has a very good quarterback in Biagio Madonna. Madonna has had a very good year for the Titans playing in the always tough MAC Red. He had a passing score last against the Warriors. Sterling Heights Stevenson does have a Division One commit on the offensive and defensive lines in lineman and Michigan commit Giovanni El-Hadi. El-Hadi has had a strong season and was huge creating holes for running back Jordan Kwaitkowski whom had a receiving and rushing touchdown last week against Southfield Arts and Tech. They also have a good wide receiver/defensive back Tony Schumate. Schumate rushed for a touchdown and caught an interception that sealed last week’s win over the Warriors. The Titans have been doing this without their best player in running back/defensive back Jordan Ramsey. Ramsey was injured a few weeks ago but it’s possible that he could be back for this game according to sources. Sterling Heights Stevenson is still a young team but they are gaining confidence each time they touch the field and the State Semifinal run was a huge part of that. There is going to be a ton of talent along with proven playoff experience on both teams. The coaching matchup is going to be very interesting as between Coach Jordan Newcomb and Coach Ron Bellamy. It will be rough that someone is going home on Saturday afternoon.

Oak Park at Wyandotte: The Knights have been relentless since being whole after the injuries. Oak Park was 0-6 heading into the playoffs but they have picked up two wins in the postseason including earning a 27-21 victory over Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit last week. The Knights defense has had their fair share of issues especially in the passing game. They allowed three passing scores against the Cubs and two to Grosse Pointe South two weeks ago. Oak Park’s defense should be tested again this week. They will see a very good quarterback in Jalen Pitchford. Pitchford has had a strong season for the Bears on both sides of the football (plays in the secondary.) Wyandotte also has two very good wide receivers in Donovan Canterbury and Richard Clark along with running back Logan McGraw. They also play on defense as well with Canterbury and Clark in the secondary and McGraw at linebacker. The Bears are coming off a 38-13 victory over Detroit Renaissance at home last week. The Knights have a very good quarterback in James Burnley. Burnley had two rushing touchdowns along with running back Davion Primm whom had 150 yards and a touchdown, and lineman Rayshawn Benny has made a huge impact since coming back from a knee injury. The coaching matchup is going to be very interesting between Coach Greg Carter and Coach Ron Adams. This is the second meeting between Oak Park and Wyandotte with the Bears winning 10-6 in the 2012 Division Two regional finals. This is going to be a very interesting game in Wyandotte on Friday night.
