District 4 at Grand Blanc

WILDCARD: Oxford

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Taylor Thomas-Grand Blanc.

INSIGHT: It’s going to be a new district as Oxford will head north and west, not east or south like in past years. The Wildcats have proven experience in Makenzie Methner, Jordan Hung, Charlotte McClenaghan, Brooke Zeiter, and Miranda Wyniemko back for Coach Rachel Bryer however they did suffer a setback as Emma Morris is out for the season with a shoulder injury Methner is back healthy after suffering a knee injury which cost her half of last season. This will not be an easy district for Oxford because of the lack of familiarity playing schools in Genesee and Lapeer counties. They will have to deal with one team from the Flint Metro League and multiple teams the Saginaw Valley League as well. Davison had a very successful postseason which included a stunning upset Saginaw Valley League rival Flint Carman Ainsworth in the regional last season. The Cardinals have a ton of proven experience and they have been mentioned as possible state title contenders. Davison has Olivia Dirske, Alora Sevenski, Olivia Green, Chelsea Orysczak, among others for Coach Craig Hitchcock. Lapeer was very young last season despite having Hannah Erla but with Erla graduated it could be a challenge for the Lightning even though Olivia Norman, Emma Muir, Charity Dundas, Hope Fisher, Leah Johnson, Hannah Baker, and Erla's sister Paige. What should help coach Andy Roberts is that they have a solid junior class coming in to add to the core that was already there for the Lightning but they are very unproven in the varsity level. Grand Blanc was a very young team last season but there is a ton of optimism heading into this season. The Bobcats have a ton of proven experience in Taylor Thompson, Riley Place, Katelyn Szczembara, Comari Hawkins, and Aniyah Small for Coach Mike McKay. Flint Kearsley is one of the top teams in the Flint Metro League. The Hornets are led by Siniaa Walker and Kennedy Streeter for Coach Traci Pigott. This district will be very different for Wildcats fans, coaches, and players that are used to seeing.

District 5 at Romeo

INSIGHT: This district looks to be very interesting and competitive. Oxford moved north into Genesee and Lapeer counties but that doesn’t change how competitive and wide open this district will look like. Waterford Kettering should be in the mix in the Lakes Valley Conference. The Captains have Markayla Holland, Malayna Schoof, Samantha Brady, Amalia Vanvakitus, Abby Hayward, Graciella Lovett, Elsha Paul, Elyanna Ball, Savanagh Labo, and Lily Overt for Coach George Yarberry. Romeo will be an interesting team to watch in the Macomb Area Conference. They have home court which helps things. The Bulldogs have Ava Muschong, Marissa Trpcevski, Mackenzie Trepcevski, Chloe Hiacoletti, Amanda Kitchen, Ross Konnie, Megan Doyle, Aubrey Karwowicz, Cassidy Banach, Reese Carmondy, and Amanda LeBlanc for Coach Katy Bosheers. Adams has a veteran lineup led by Maddie Dolegina, Elizabeth Blane, Lauren Petersmark, Madison Kessman, Abbey Drahnak, Snigdha Tenneri, Emma Klott, and Anaiya Howard for Coach Shay Lewis. Clarkston is loaded with a ton of proven experience after winning the district last season. The Wolves have Maddie Skoruspki, Kaitlyn Kaul, Izzy Hadley, Olivia Toderan, Morgan Hunter, Kiera Tolmie, Lena Eblenkamp, Ryan Bordogna, and Ava Hernandez for Coach John Weyer. Lake Orion is going to be a very interesting team to watch. The Dragons have a boatload of talent back for Coach Bob Brydges in Kylie Heck, Maddie Ebbert, Meghan Marshall, Kierra Tierney, and Sydney Maddox. This should be a very interesting district to watch in Macomb County.

District 6 at Waterford Mott

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Summer and Indya Davis-West Bloomfield.

INSIGHT: This district should be very interesting in Waterford. Pontiac could not field a team this season because of lack of numbers so the MHSAA put Birmingham Marian in this district. The early favorite has to be West Bloomfield with the talent and experience that they have back. The Lakers are loaded after taking Hartland to the limit in the regional semifinals last season. West Bloomfield has proven experience in Lola Chambers, Logan Lewis, Sydney Hendrix, Myonna Hooper, along with newcomers Kendall Hendrix, Destiny Washington, Indya Davis, and Summer Davis for Coach Bert Mosley. Avondale has a ton of questions when it comes to program strength. The Yellow Jackets have Reigan Lawrence and Savannah Schmidt back for Coach Roy Christmon. Bloomfield Hills has had a very turbulent offseason which had three coaching changes in two months. They have a new coach in Kristen Massey whom was a former player. It could also be a struggle for the Blackhawks with a completely new team and new system. Birmingham Marian whom enters this district after being placed at Royal Oak is very talented and brings a ton of experience. The Mustangs have Shannon Kennedy, Sarah Sylvester, Anna Herberholz, Grace Rotter, Izabel Toma, Lauren Cipzar, and Nila Reed for Coach Mary Cicerone. Waterford Mott could have a very strong say in this district and they have home court as well. The Corsairs have Makayla Fuerst and Mikaila Proctor along with Aleea Austin, Nicksyn Carter, and Kristen De’Anna for Coach Michelle Sklar. If everything goes right the district final could be very interesting.

District 25 at Novi

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Sela Lefler-North Farmington.

INSIGHT: This should be an interesting district to watch especially with the same teams that were in this district last season. Farmington Hills Mercy being deemed the favorite not only in the district but in the Catholic League as well. There should plenty of challengers that could derail the Marlins in this district. North Farmington will be a very interesting team to watch. The Raiders have a young group after losing some key players after making the district finals last season. North Farmington will have Sela Lefler, Heaven Rogers, and Kelsey Newton for Coach Jeff Simpson. Farmington whom is one of the favorites in the Gold has a ton of proven experience for Coach Laura Guzman. The Falcons have Autumn Barnett, Lilly Morrisette, Kennedi Jones, Val Pallett, Alyssa Simmons, Brielle Burns, Kaitlyn Carnac, and Madelyn Beckwitch. Farmington Hills Mercy is going to be a very interesting team to watch. The Marlins are deep, talented, and they have program strength. Farmington Hills Mercy has all five starters back from last season in Julia Bishop, Maddie Kennedy, Alexis Roberts, Ellie Tisko, Maddie Kenny, and Maya White for Coach Gary Morris. Livonia Stevenson should be an interesting team despite winning 11 games last season and playing in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association. The Spartans have Kerry Donahue for Coach Kareem Smart. Novi who is in the same league as Livonia Stevenson should be solid. The Wildcats will have Hannah Verbrackern, Eva Khalil, Sammy Maday, Maranda Baumbick, and Emma Lentz for Coach CJ Aro. It should be interesting to see what happens in this district.

District 26 at Royal Oak

INSIGHT: There were some changes in this district that was made now that Birmingham Marian has moved north to the Waterford Mott district but there are a ton of good teams that are in this district. Royal Oak is well known for their defense and they have home court. Sarah Soraghan along with Lexi Rosemberg and Sarah Ammon is back for Coach Brian Sopota to anchor the Ravens. Groves is a very interesting team to watch. The Falcons have a new coach in AntJuan Simpkins who coached at River Rouge and brings a huge AAU background. The Falcons have questions with program strength despite having Kaitlyn Quinn, Rachel Sample, along with a ton of young blend of talent that has emerged in Neveah Otis, Destiny McCurdy, and Kaitlyn Sanders. Southfield Arts and Tech is in an interesting spot. The Warriors lost Cheyenne McEvans to graduation this offseason and Coach Michelle Marshall retired. They will have a new system in place. What will help Southfield Arts and Tech is that they will have Jaylen Austin and Kayonia Willis back for new coach Shaquita Coltrane in what could be a rebuilding year for the Warriors. Berkley could be a sleeper in this district because of the experience they have back. The Bears have Ashley Loon, Sammi Withrow, Orley Kreugel, Cassidy Gifford, Tessa Voss, and Brooklyn Weems for Coach Kirk Carolan. Seaholm could be in for challenge despite having some experience back. They have Gwyn Wiseman, Megan Blake, Grace Wiebler, and Kate Sullivan for Coach Chris Manchester. This district could be anyone's ball game.

District 27 at Warren Fitzgerald

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Nika Dorsey-Detroit Renaissance.

INSIGHT: This district looks to be a mismatch on paper even though Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties are going to be well represented. Detroit Renaissance has built a basketball power in not only in the Detroit Public School League but in the State as well and the numbers prove it. The Phoenix made a ton of noise last season winning the Detroit Public School League tournament and are looking to do more again. Detroit Renaissance has Nika Dorsey, Taylor Anderson, Shannon Wheeler, Kailee Davis, along with newcomers Makayla Johnson and Christian Sanders for Coach Shane Lawal. The Phoenix's arch rival for the last few years was Detroit Mumford. The Mustangs could struggle after losing a ton of experience from last season to graduation but Detroit Mumford could surprise some people in the Detroit Public School League and make some noise in the postseason. Warren Mott looks to be very interesting to keep an eye on not only in the Macomb Area Conference but in this district as well. The Marauders will have Bridget Bogden, Devita Brown, Jayden Hardiman, and Ashley Younis for Coach Patrick Schmidt. Warren Fitzgerald really struggled only winning three games last season. The Spartans could very well do so again despite having home court. Oak Park has some questions to address after winning 13 games last season. The Knights will have Tayna Todd back for Coach Peggy Evans-Carr. This district looks to be a Detroit Renaissance run away but anything could happen.

District 29 at Rochester

NEXT: Stoney Creek

WILDCARD: Rochester

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Jackie Hurst-Rochester.

INSIGHT: This district could have some fireworks written all over it. The early favorite in this district has to be Troy. The Colts are going to be loaded with talent in Kendal Zeiter, Charlotte Soboka, Alyssa Matuza, Calen Knight, and Lauren Gumma for new coach Julius Porter. Porter comes to Troy bringing with him a ton of success as an assistant under legendary boys basketball coach Dan Fife at Clarkston. What helps the Colts is that Utica is not in their district after they knocked Troy out in the previous two seasons including last season when the Colts were the top seed in this district. (Utica went more south this year.) Rochester really wants to prove that their district finals appearance last season wasn't a fluke. They will certainly have a chance to prove doubters wrong this season and they have home court as well. The Falcons are loaded with proven experience led by Megan Lorenzo, Anaya Rangarijan, Brooke Gordon, and Jackie Hurst for Coach Bill Thurston. Stoney Creek will be a very interesting team to watch as Coach Kellen James and his team will be the hunters and not the hunted as in past years. The Cougars will have a very deep team in Sydney LaPrarie, Sarah LaPrarie, Mia Carson, and Milana Skoric. Troy Athens is going to be a very young team after losing 11 seniors to graduation last season. The Red Hawks have Nitaya Balusu, Ciara Shoales, and Gillian Ciak back for Coach Stacie Klumpp. Utica Eisenhower despite being around 500 in the Macomb Area Conference shocked a ton of folks and won the district last season. The Eagles have some talent back for Coach Cliff Piper in Emma Griffiths. This district as mentioned earlier could see some fireworks. There are a lot of good teams in this district.

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Lauren Droska-Warren Regina.

INSIGHT: This could be a competitive district if things go right even though no one has home court as of yet. Ferndale did not field a team this season because of the numbers. Ferndale University had a very good year winning 14 games last season. The Golden Eagles will be entering into the OAA which that will open up more challenges. Warren Lincoln should be an interesting team to watch in this district. The Abes have been a solid program under Coach Jalen Ford and they will look to keep the motivation riding into this district. Hazel Park is an interesting program to keep an eye on. The Vikings have been building a program in the Macomb Area Conference after leaving the OAA in 2019 under Coach and former standout Dakota Ogles. Hazel Park has some experience coming back which helps. Detroit Old Redford could struggle again this season. Warren Regina should be the favorite in this district with the experience they have coming back after having a great year last season. The Satellites have Reagan Stempin, Noelle Robinson, Grace Zdankiewicz and, Lauren Droska for Coach Diane Laffey. This district should be interesting to watch.
