When you are a team that rely on penalty kicks to win games, it's the ultimate sudden death and also the right to move on or not. You look great if you win and that's what Troy Athens has been relying on in the State tournament.
But there is a danger to the ultimate sudden death, you lose them too.
That's what happened on Saturday afternoon in the State Finals at Grand Rapids Comstock Park.
The East Kentwood Falcons beat the Red Hawks in penalty kicks 3-2 and won 1-0 denying Troy Athens their first State Championship since 1997.
Troy Athens have used penalty kicks to beat Macomb Dakota in the regional final and Rochester in the State semifinals to get to this point both occurring this week.
East Kentwood controlled the play in the first half and early second half but the Red Hawks controlled play for the rest of the second half and overtime periods.
Troy Athens conclude the season at 19-5-2 and finished third in the Red. The Red Hawks have nothing to be a shame off this season and expect them to be back next season.
