This will not include OAA vs OAA matchups it’s OAA vs a non-league
school. It’s not in any particular order. Not discrediting any other matchup
but feel these are the top non-league games of the season.
Berkley at Waterford Mott: December 6th:
The Bears will have to replace a ton of talent from a team that shared the Gold
with Troy Athens and Groves but they are a contender to Groves for the Gold
this season. Berkley will be tested when they go to Waterford to play the
Corsairs. I don’t know if coach Jordan Gruppen team matches up well with
Waterford Mott especially in the post with Myra Williams and Emily Huff. It
will be interesting to watch.
Stoney Creek vs Belleville: December 17th: Stoney Creek coach Kellen James wanted a tough non-conference schedule well he will get that when they play Belleville. The Tigers won a district crown last season and finished 15-5. Belleville is expected to be a top contender in their league this season. The Cougars have a tough non conference slate as well as they will have to play Waterford Kettering, Highland Park Chandler Park Academy, Holly, and they are in the Motor City Roundball Classic as well. Talk about a tough schedule.
Stoney Creek vs Waterford Kettering: December 21st:
The Cougars will be just fresh off playing the Crusaders will play yet
another solid team in Waterford Kettering at home in Rochester. The Captains
will be a tough challenge for coach Kellen James’s crew led by Maddie Case,
Jayla Williams, and Lilla Schoof, among others but also the four days in
advance will be a challenge for this crew.
Romeo at Orion: November 29th: Perhaps the
most interesting player matchup will be in this matchup between Romeo’s Amber
Flinn and Orion’s Maddie Novak also this is coach Kevin Kopec’s Varsity
coaching debut for the Dragons. The Bulldogs have been a Macomb County power
while Orion has become an Oakland County Power. This one will come down to the
role players of each team and whom will show up in this one will win this game.
Southfield Arts and Tech vs Midland Dow: December 3rd
at Arbor Prep: Well the Warriors will be tested in this game against the
Chargers. Coach Michelle Marshall coaching at Southfield Arts and Tech will
have a very talented team led by the services of Deja Church with her but the
Chargers have a very talented player themselves in Ellie Taylor. Taylor had 44
points last season against Saginaw Arthur Hill. Also, Midland Dow has a
sophomore in Maizie Taylor whom has had her moments last season as well. It
will be interesting between the Warriors and the Chargers at Arbor Prep.
North Farmington vs Waterford Mott: December 29th
at Bloomfield Hills: This will be interesting as the Raiders will meet
the Corsairs at Bloomfield Hills. The matchup between two AAU Michigan Storm
teammates in Kierra Crockett of North Farmington and Waterford Mott’s Myra
Williams will be a fun matchup to keep an eye on inside. Samantha Cherney is
the wildcard in this game for the Raiders as she can play the post and go up
against Williams directly or can play any forward to center spot. Whomever wins
the guard matchup will win this game.
Royal Oak at Walled Lake Northern: December 28th:
If coach Brian Sopota wants to make an impact this season with his Ravens
then they must find a way to overcome beating the Knights of Walled Lake
Northern. The Knights have had Royal Oak’s number winning the last two
meetings, the person doing the damage has been Courtney Callahan. Callahan has
done damage against the Ravens the last two seasons. This is a must win game
for Royal Oak to get off to a good start.
Adams vs Macomb Dakota: December 23rd at
Rochester: This will be a rematch for the Highlanders as they will play the
Cougars in the Rochester Holiday Classic at Rochester. Adams lost 54-45 to
Macomb Dakota last season but the Cougars will be experienced this season with
eight seniors back for them. Macomb Dakota returns Emily Langolf, J’May
Simmons, Corbin Hinson, and Tara Bieniewicz but they had problems stopping
Maggie Rogers. She had 15 points in the meeting in Macomb. This one will be a
test for coach Shay Lewis’s crew hoping that she put last season’s rough year
to rest.
Oxford at Lapeer: December 15th: This one
will be a major test for coach Rachel Bryer’s Wildcats as she will take her
team into Lapeer County to face the Lightning. Lapeer is very experienced and
talented led by Ashley Garcia, Lisa West, Samantha Thick, and Victoria Tripp. The
Lightning went into Oxford last season and beat the Wildcats pretty handily but
Oxford this season will be better under Bryer. This will be an interesting one
to watch.
Caledonia or Benton Harbor vs Bloomfield Hills: December
3rd at Caledonia: Well, pending if the Blackhawks can get by
Spring Lake then it’s possible that they could see the host school in the final
of the Caledonia tournament. Now if Bloomfield Hills gets Benton Harbor then
thankfully the Blackhawks won’t see the 2016 Miss Basketball Kysre Gondrezick whom
had 72 points in a game last season. Either way playing Benton Harbor or
Caledonia would be a good test for the Blackhawks to open up their season.
