Southfield finally has it's new head coach.
Oddly enough it comes from their arch rival.
The Blue Jays named Mike Avery as the team's new head boys basketball coach replacing Gary Teasley whom retired last season.
Avery spent the last three seasons with the Southfield-Lathrup while mentoring two top notch players Jonathan Williams and Roy Marble Jr.
Southfield went 12-1 in the summer league this summer. Avery returns three top players in guards Amauri Hardy, Michael Flowers, and forward Jordan Flowers.
It also seems that Avery could be the next head coach of the new Southfield High School once them and Lathrup merge next season. He knows the Chargers very well and works in the Southfield School District so it might have made sense for them to make Avery their head coach.
Lathrup will probably name one of their assistants to coach the team for their guaranteed 21 games in their final season as a school.
Southfield and Lathrup will see each other twice this season as they are in the Red with Clarkston, Adams, North Farmington, and Troy Athens. Also both schools are in a tough district at Southfield with Detroit Renaissance, Oak Park, Berkley, and state title contender University of Detroit Jesuit.
We shall see what happens.
