Here is my early insight and preview of the regional affecting OAA schools. Underlined are projected regional champions.

Region 6 @ Ann Arbor Huron

BOYS TEAMS: Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Northville, Novi.

THOUGHTS: This should be an interesting regional at Ann Arbor Huron. Novi Detroit Catholic Central has had a really good season and should do very well in the Boys. Novi and Northville are also expected to do well on the boys side as well. On the girls side, I think Plymouth Canton should be the favorite to win this regional while Novi and Livonia Stevenson look to be in the mix as well. It should be an interesting regional to watch.

BOYS TEAMS: Lakeland, Milford, Fenton.

THOUGHTS: Western Oakland County has always been loaded with talent and this season is no exception. On the girls side Walled Lake Northern is the early favorite but watch for Bloomfield Hills, Milford, Fenton, and Lakeland. All of these teams could make some noise in this regional. On the boys side Lakeland has had a really good year but they were second in the Lakes Valley meet to Milford. Milford should be in the conversation. Fenton, Farmington, and Walled Lake Northern should battle for the last spot to get into the State Finals field. This should be an interesting regional to say the least.

THOUGHTS: This is an interesting regional at Grosse Pointe South. On the girls side, for some reason watch Royal Oak. The Ravens have a solid core of runners and should be in the mix as well. Troy, Seaholm, and Fraser are also solid programs as well and should do very well in this regional. On the boys side, Grosse Pointe South is the favorite and should do well. Troy and Royal Oak should be in the mix as well. It should be an interesting regional to watch.

BOYS TEAMS: Lake Orion, Romeo, Port Huron Northern.

GIRLS TEAMS: Romeo, Oxford, Macomb Dakota.

THOUGHTS: Region nine is very talented on both sides. On the girls side the top two are pretty much locks but the third slot looks to be loaded with Utica, Stoney Creek, and Macomb Dakota pretty much battling it out to see who moves to the State Finals. On the boys side, Lake Orion and Romeo are locked to get to the State Finals but Port Huron Northern and Stoney Creek should battle for that third spot. It should be an interesting regional at New Baltimore Anchor Bay.

BOYS TEAMS: Pinckney, Linden, Lake Fenton.

THOUGHTS: This is shaping up to be a very interesting regional to watch. Pinckney should challenge in both regionals. They are the early favorite in the boys. Linden and Lake Fenton should also be in the mix along with Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, and Goodrich. Goodrich is the early favorite in the girls. Pinckney and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep should also score very well. Birmingham Marian will certainly be a team to watch along with Linden. It should be a very interesting regional to say the least.

Boys Soccer Regional Preview.

Here is my insight on the two regional matchups around the OAA boys soccer world.

TROY vs Warren DeLaSalle @ Stoney Creek

The Colts went through a very tough district by getting by Royal Oak, Troy Athens, and Berkley. All of them were top ten teams. Troy is the top ranked team in the State and has a very interesting regional at Stoney Creek which also features New Baltimore Anchor Bay and Utica Eisenhower in the other regional semifinal. I can see the Colts getting to the next round to play Utica Eisenhower in the regional finals. It should be a good regional final at Stoney Creek.

 

CLARKSTON vs GROVES @ Novi

These are two teams that haven’t seen each other this season will play at Novi in the regional semifinals. Groves won the White and also their district where they beat Livonia Stevenson in a hard fought district finals. Clarkston is second in the State behind Troy won their district by beating Oxford in the district finals. The other side of the regional at Novi features Walled Lake Central and Northville. It should be an interesting matchup on that side of the draw. I expect this will be a tough match but the Wolves have a little bit more firepower to move on past the Falcons.

Week Nine and Postseason Thoughts.

Berkley: The Bears picked up a strong 42-8 victory over Pontiac. They have an interesting postseason matchup looming with Waterford Mott. The only concern I have is that the Corsairs have been more battle tested than Berkley. It will be a very interesting matchup at Hurley Field.

Ferndale: The Eagles lost a tough one to Farmington on Friday night 28-6. Ferndale has a lot of talent coming back for next year. Coach Eric Royal should be all right going forward.

Farmington: The Falcons closed out the season strong winning four straight games including a 28-6 victory over Ferndale on Friday night. Farmington has some talent coming back next season which should help Coach Jason Albrecht.

Troy Athens: The Red Hawks took a very disappointing loss to Avondale on Friday night falling 30-10 at Dick Bye Field. There will be some questions for Coach Billy Keenest and his team this offseason. Troy Athens though is heading in the right direction.

Troy: The Colts fell 21-10 to Bloomfield Hills on Friday night costing them the Blue as well. They are still in the postseason and have a really difficult matchup looming with Chippewa Valley in the first round. The Big Reds have been battle tested and they are coming off a 29-28 loss to Oxford last week. This is an absolutely horrible matchup for Troy.

Avondale: The Yellow Jackets earned their way into the postseason with a 30-10 home win over Troy Athens on Friday night. Avondale heads to Lawrence Tech for their first round postseason matchup with Birmingham Brother Rice next week. The Yellow Jackets do not match up well with the Warriors in this matchup. We’ll see what happens.

Bloomfield Hills: The Blackhawks earned the Blue title with a 21-10 win over Troy on Friday night. The bad news is they have to play Novi Detroit Catholic Central next week. The Shamrocks have played a much tougher schedule than Bloomfield Hills. This is a really bad matchup for the Blackhawks in the postseason.

Pontiac: The Phoenix fell 42-8 to Berkley on Friday night on their new home field. Pontiac has a ton of positives to look forward to next season. They have played much better and has a young nucleus. I like the direction that Coach Ken Wade has this program going.

Royal Oak: The Ravens were just overmatched on Friday night by a Fraser team that made the playoffs 54-13 on Friday night. Royal Oak finishes the season at 2-7. They do have some questions to address this offseason.

Adams: The Highlanders picked up a 42-6 win over Detroit Renaissance on Friday night. They get a very interesting first round matchup with Lapeer. The Lightning beat Davison 38-35 on Friday night and features a huge offensive line and a talented running back in Brayden McKenna. Adams isn’t really overmatched though as the veer is the great equalizer. This should be a fun matchup between the Highlanders and the Lightning.

North Farmington: The Raiders were just outmatched at Ron Holland Field falling 56-0 to Traverse City Central. North Farmington has Ryan Shelby coming back however there are major concerns surrounding program strength heading into next season. The Raiders could be in some trouble heading into next season.

Groves: The Falcons battled with Sterling Heights Stevenson on Friday night falling 24-23 on their home field. Groves loses a lot of talent next season and program strength isn’t the greatest. A lot of questions for Coach Brendan Flaherty and company.

Oak Park: The Knights suffered a tough 50-28 loss to Clarkston on Friday night. Oak Park has a ton of questions next season for Coach Greg Carter.

Rochester: The Falcons took a very disappointing loss to Ann Arbor Huron 31-14 on their home field on Friday night. Rochester had their chances but couldn’t get through. The Falcons should be solid next season for Coach Eric Vernon and company.

Seaholm: The Maples took a tough 43-21 loss to Stoney Creek on Friday night. Seaholm took a ton of lumps this season. They should be better next season for Coach Jim DeWald.

West Bloomfield: The Lakers are peaking at the right time with a 42-24 win over Utica Eisenhower last week. West Bloomfield takes on Novi in the Swamp. It should be an interesting matchup but the Lakers match up very well with the Wildcats. Also let’s not forget in 2017 that it was Novi that upset West Bloomfield in the Swamp. Hoping not for a repeat performance.

Clarkston: Ethan Clark had over 240 rushing yards and five touchdowns in their 50-28 win over Oak Park last week. The Wolves are rolling and they have an interesting postseason matchup with Oxford looming. Clarkston won 20-17 at Oxford a few weeks ago. This should be a fun matchup.

Lake Orion: The Dragons fell 34-21 to Saline on Friday night. Lake Orion fell to 3-6 and miss the postseason. There are a lot of questions for Lake Orion heading into the offseason. This will be a program to watch in the future and current with their sub-varsities went undefeated.

Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors defense gave up 40 points for the fifth straight week but they were competitive despite falling 45-44 to River Rouge last week. Southfield Arts and Tech has a ton of issues they need to address especially with program strength and defense. It should be a very interesting offseason for Coach Aaron Marshall and company.

Oxford: The Wildcats made a huge statement by beating Chippewa Valley 29-28 on Friday night at the blue turf. Oxford has been red hot and peaking at the right time. They won five of six with the one loss being to Clarkston 20-17. The Wildcats have a chance to avenge that loss when they play this week in Clarkston. It should be a fun matchup between the two rivals.

Stoney Creek: The Cougars were the first team out of Division One on Sunday night. Stoney Creek beat Seaholm 43-21 but they aren’t in the postseason. The Cougars will be an interesting team to watch next season. They should be in the mix next season.

Harper Woods: The Pioneers earned a huge 23-6 win over Ecorse on Friday night. Harper Woods has a very tough matchup with River Rouge looming. The Panthers earned a 45-44 win over Southfield Arts and Tech. The Pioneers are athletic and talented and could make some noise in Division Three.

TEAM THAT MADE A STATEMENT: Oxford: The Wildcats battled and came back with a stunning 29-28 win over Chippewa Valley on Friday night. Oxford scored on a two point try to win the game. The Wildcats have an interesting matchup looming with Clarkston next week.

TOUGH LOSS: Troy: The Colts had a tough 21-10 loss to Bloomfield Hills on Friday night. Troy is heading into the postseason but it’s a much tougher matchup that looms though with MAC Red powerhouse Chippewa Valley next week.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors battled on Friday night with River Rouge only to see the Panthers come back and beat them 45-44 on Friday night. Southfield Arts and Tech has some questions heading into the offseason but Isiah Marshall looked solid in the game. Coach Aaron Marshall has to address a ton of things including program strength heading into next season.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: Troy Athens: The Red Hawks had everything in front of them, all they had to do was win but they ran into a red hot Avondale squad at Dick Bye Field on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets beat Troy Athens 30-10 denying them a trip to the postseason. There are a lot of questions heading into the offseason for the Red Hawks.

1. Adams at Detroit Renaissance: It has been a special season for the Highlanders. Adams is a possible State title contender with the way they’ve been playing. The Highlanders head to Detroit in what should be an interesting matchup with Detroit Renaissance. The Phoenix were blown out 41-6 by Troy Athens last week. This looks to be a complete mismatch on paper. It could get ugly real quick.

2. West Bloomfield at Utica Eisenhower: The Lakers are starting to figure some things out but they had some trouble with North Farmington last week before pulling away in the fourth quarter winning 30-16 in the Swamp. West Bloomfield heads to Sweinhart to take on Utica Eisenhower has really struggled all season. The Eagles lost 22-17 to New Baltimore Anchor Bay last week. What hasn’t helped Utica Eisenhower is that they played in the Macomb Area Conference Red and haven’t had their quarterback Preston Crumm whom torn his ACL in their week one loss to Lake Orion. This looks to be a mismatch on paper but Sweinhart has posted some magical close games. Knowing the Lakers they should be well aware.

3. Clarkston at Oak Park: This is an interesting matchup of two teams that are really no strangers to one another. The Wolves are riding high after beating Groves 33-8 last week. The Knights are coming off a 42-28 victory over Southfield Arts and Tech last week. Clarkston looks to be the favorites on paper in this game. A win for Oak Park would be huge for their postseason hopes.

6. Troy at 5. Bloomfield Hills: Bloomfield Hills should be rocking on Friday night. This is the biggest game for both teams this season. Both are undefeated and postseason bound. In my honest opinion this game should had been on Bally Sports Detroit. The Colts have won nine of their last 10 games dating back to last season which started with a 29-14 postseason victory over the Blackhawks at Bloomfield Hills. The Blackhawks have managed to put things together with their 8-0 record but we will know a lot about them these next two weeks. The quarterback matchup between Max Stromberg and CJ Jackson is very interesting. Also Shane Winter vs Darius Whiteside is another very interesting matchup as well. The winner gets the Blue title and a likely move to the White along with momentum heading into the postseason.

Chippewa Valley at 4. Oxford: This is a must win game for the Wildcats taking on a Big Reds team that is solid. If Oxford doesn’t win this game then they would have to do some praying. Chippewa Valley has some very good and talented players led by quarterback Ryan Schuster. The Big Reds are deep and talented as well. The quarterback and playmaking matchup is very interesting. This is a game that the Wildcats really need to have on their home field as mentioned.

7. Berkley at Pontiac: It’s the second game at the new stadium for Pontiac but it’s going to be a tough one for them. The Phoenix were very competitive despite falling 14-6 to Ferndale last week. It’s going to get a lot tougher with Berkley coming to town as mentioned. The Bears fell 10-7 to Troy last week which ended their Blue title hopes. They want to gain some confidence before heading into the postseason next week. It could get very ugly for Pontiac in this game.

9. Troy Athens at Avondale: The Red Hawks postseason hopes got a little bit of a boost in finding a week eight when they played Detroit Renaissance winning 41-6 on their home field last week. Troy Athens has a chance to make the postseason if they can win this game against the Yellow Jackets at Dick Bye Field. They have had their ups and downs this year. Avondale’s postseason hopes took a hit when they lost 28-24 to Farmington last week. However they are still in the postseason conversation despite their 3-5 record. It’s a big game for both teams in Auburn Hills.

Ann Arbor Huron at 8. Rochester: This is going to be a very interesting game for the Falcons hosting Ann Arbor Huron which is having their best season in a long while. The River Rats have been having a really good season as mentioned, they are 7-1 coming into this game and 10-4 in the last two years (5-73 since 2011.) Their only loss was 35-21 to Saline in Week Two this season. Rochester is coming off a 33-14 loss to Oxford last week. This is a golden opportunity for the Falcons to make the playoffs if they win this game. If they lose they are likely out. This is huge for both teams.

10. Stoney Creek at Seaholm: It hasn’t been a struggling year for both teams. Both teams are very young this season. Stoney Creek learned what life is in the Red was but they came through and picked up a league win over Southfield Arts and Tech. The Cougars fell 40-20 to Adams last week on their home field. Stoney Creek has an outside shot of getting into the postseason if they can win this game and get some help from other teams. Seaholm has had their fair share of moments including an upset win over North Farmington this season. The Maples are coming off a 35-6 loss to Lake Orion last week. It should be a very interesting matchup in the Maple Forest to say the least.

Ferndale at Farmington: The Falcons are starting to peak at the right time. They have won three straight including a hard earned 28-24 victory over Avondale at Dick Bye Field last week. It has been a rough year for the Eagles. Ferndale had to survive 14-6 over Pontiac last week. Next year should be the Eagles year with the experience they have coming back. This should be a very interesting game in Farmington.

Royal Oak at Fraser: This is a rematch of last season’s 34-24 Fraser victory in Royal Oak. The Ravens have had a very tough year. They have lost three straight games including a 38-7 loss to Bloomfield Hills last week. The Ramblers have won three of their last four games including a 29-12 victory over Grosse Pointe North last week. This should be a good game between these two teams like last season.

Southfield Arts and Tech at River Rouge: Where has the Warriors defense gone lately??? They have given up over 40 points in that span. They are taking on a Panthers team that has had Southfield Arts and Tech’s number. This game is on Bally Sports Detroit but this could get very ugly for the Warriors unless they can fix their defensive struggles.

Groves at Sterling Heights Stevenson: It has been a really difficult season for the Falcons and it’s about to get tougher with a trip to Runkel Field to play the Titans. Sterling Heights Stevenson shared the Red with Romeo. They won 42-6 over Utica Ford II last week. Groves has had a ton of struggles as mentioned including a 33-8 loss to Clarkston last week but going to Macomb County is going to be a very tough chore for them.

Lake Orion at Saline: It has been a very difficult season for the Dragons. They have a chance to sneak into the postseason with a monster win at Saline and some help along the way. The Hornets are rolling and unbeaten. Saline had to survive Dexter 42-40 last week on their home field. Lake Orion is going to need to bring everything they have and then some if they want to pull off the upset in Washtenaw County.

COTTER: SALINE 35, LAKE ORION 14.

Traverse City Central at North Farmington: This is a playoff rematch of last season’s 50-22 Traverse City Central regional final victory at Thirby Field. The Trojans are rolling since their week one loss to DeWitt winning seven straight and feature quarterback Josh Burnham. The Raiders have lost five straight and really haven’t been the same since leading 17-0 at Oak Park a few weeks ago. If North Farmington can win this game then maybe they could sneak into the postseason but that’s a huge if.

Harper Woods at Ecorse: This is the final game of the regular season for the Pioneers as an independent before joining the OAA next fall. Harper Woods is coming off a tough 47-26 loss to Warren DeLaSalle last week. Ecorse has had a really good season. The Red Raiders have won two straight games since losing to Westland Lutheran 27-26. They are coming off an 18-16 win over Flint Hamady last week. I think there is a talent gap between these two teams in this game. Both teams should be playoff bound next week.
